(Reuters) - Cable maker Belden Inc said it will sell its Thermax and Raydex cable businesses to diversified manufacturer Carlisle Cos Inc for about $265 million, including debt, as it looks to exit the aerospace and defense markets.
Belden, which also makes cables and networking products for the broadcast and consumer electronics industries, has been unable to remain competitive offering cables as a stand-alone product to the aerospace and defense markets, company spokesman Matt Tractenberg said.
Belden has been acquiring connector companies that complement its cable offerings in other markets, and was probably unable to find a suitable deal for the Thermax and Raydex businesses, Stifel Nicolaus & Company analyst Noelle Dilts said.
"Belden's strategy is that it is looking to sell total solutions - cables and connectors. They don't want to sell stand-alone cables," Dilts said.
Thermax and Raydex, which have combined annual sales of about $112 million, make hook-up, data and coaxial wires and cables for commercial aerospace, defense and industrial markets.
Belden, which has a market value of about $1.60 billion, said it would use the proceeds to help fund a $200 million buyback of its common stock.
Carlisle said it expects the acquisition to close by December 31 and add to earnings in 2013.
Belden's shares, which had gained about 6 percent in value so far this year, were up 5 percent at $38.33 in afternoon trade on the New York Stock Exchange. Carlisle's stock was up 1 percent at $56.68.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - New sanctions aimed at reducing global trade with Iran in the energy, shipping and metals sectors may soon be considered by the U.S. Senate as part of an annual defense policy bill, senators and aides said on Tuesday.
The sanctions legislation, which has not yet been unveiled, comes during a crowded calendar as the Senate races to deal with deficit reduction, the defense bill and other pressing issues by the end of the year.
The package would build on current U.S. sanctions, passed almost a year ago, that have slashed Iran's oil revenues. The goal is to pressure Tehran to stop efforts to enrich uranium to levels that could be used in weapons.
Tehran has said its nuclear program is strictly for civilian purposes.
Democratic Senator Robert Menendez and Republican Mark Kirk have crafted new sanctions that would punish foreign banks that handle transactions for a broad sector of industries, including shipping, ports, ship building and more types of energy.
"Our significant effort right now is in pursuing areas of the economy that can lead to proliferation - energy, shipping, to mention a few," Menendez said in a brief hallway interview.
U.S. persons and companies have long been barred from doing business with Iranian entities. These new sanctions apply to foreign banks, threatening to ban them from the U.S. financial system unless they cut their dealings with Iran.
Senator Carl Levin, the Democratic chairman of the Armed Services Committee, said he was reviewing a draft version of the sanctions and was amenable to the measures being added to the defense bill.
"It's fine with me," Levin said. "Going in, I favor strengthening any way we can the sanctions against Iran."
The package seeks to ban financial transactions with any person or organization blacklisted for their association with the Iranian government, as well as sales of metallurgical coal and precious metals, a congressional aide said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The sanctions would end "Turkey's game of gold for natural gas," a senior Senate aide said, referring to reports that Turkey has been paying for natural gas with gold due to sanctions rules.
The legislation "would bring economic sanctions on Iran near de facto trade embargo levels with the hope of speeding up the date by which Iran's economy will collapse," the aide said.
The legislation will also impose new bans on insurance and re-insurance for shipments of a broader range of goods, aides said.

Q. Do many germs escape into the air when a toilet is flushed, and do they affect our health?
A. The jury is still out on this age-old question, a new review of the scientific literature suggests.
The possible peril of a toilet plume became famous through a 1975 study by Charles P. Gerba in the journal Applied Microbiology. Dr. Gerba seeded household toilets with disease germs and then tested to see if they survived after flushing. He concluded that ?there is a possibility that a person may acquire an infection from an aerosol produced by a toilet.?
But a new review article finds that there are as yet no direct cases of proven infection, and that the possible risk is still unknown. The researchers looked at all the peer-reviewed studies of the matter, both epidemiological and microbiological. Their study, published last month by The American Journal of Infection Control, says that ?no studies have yet clearly demonstrated or refuted toilet-plume-related disease transmission, and the significance of the risk remains largely uncharacterized.?
The new study concludes that toilet plumes ?could play a contributory role in the transmission of infectious diseases? but that additional research is warranted to assess the risks. In the meantime, when someone in the house is sick or at risk of illness, it might be prudent to protect toothbrushes and drinking glasses by putting them in the medicine cabinet.

The man with the biggest talk and the biggest television set in Texas said he didn?t think his coach has ?lost the team,? but it?s clear Jerry Jones isn?t happy with the way things have gone.
After yesterday?s 38-31 loss to the Redskins, which dropped them to 5-6 and marked the fourth straight home game they?ve trailed by double digits, Jones made it clear he expects success.
?That would be real difficult right now because you would have to point to things like comebacks, and that?s hollow when you are not winning the game,? Jones said, via Tim McMahon of ESPNDallas.com. ?Or last week, we win one [against the Browns] and we have to come back to win it, but we don?t win it playing well. So that?s hollow right now.?
Talk of coach Jason Garrett?s future is valid, not just because he?s the coach of the Cowboys, but because he?s 18-17 as a head coach.
?I don?t want to be talking about looking through,? Jones said. ?Our expectations were to compete for the playoffs and then whatever else we can get when you get there, compete for. We know you?ve got to be playing well when you get there.
?We?ve had some setbacks on some injuries, but that?s not the difference out here right now at all.?
The Cowboys have already been linked to a pair of big-fish names already (Sean Payton and Mike Holmgren) and that talk isn?t going to slow down until or unless they string together some wins.
?Yeah, I expect success,? Jones said when asked if a lack of success could force him to consider changes this offseason. ?Now, I don?t have any implied or anything that I?ve said, ?Success, a level of success, or else.? I?m not going there and haven?t ? and haven?t gone there in my mind.
?I expected to come in here and win today. And I expected to win again and to win again. Under those circumstances, you don?t have to think about those things.?
OK, then. Happy Thanksgiving Jason.

BRASILIA, Brazil ? Brazil's Supreme Court is now headed by a black justice for the first time.
Joaquim Barbosa was sworn in on Thursday. He became the only black ever to serve on the court when he joined it in 2003, even though more than half of the country's 192 million people identify themselves as having African descent.
Barbosa, 58, was elected in October to a two-year tenure as Supreme Court president. His election was a foregone conclusion since the court's presidency always goes to the justice who has served on the bench the longest.
Over the past several weeks he gained national and international renown presiding over a high-profile corruption trial involving a congressional cash-for-votes scheme. The court has convicted 25 people including the former chief of staff of ex-President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
President Dilma Rousseff, members of her Cabinet, state governors, congressional leaders and several sports and entertainment personalities were present at Barbosa's swearing in.
"The multiculturalism that characterizes the Brazilian people is evident here today with Joaquim Barbosa heading the highest court of the land," said Ophir Cavalcante, president of the Brazilian Bar Association in a speech during the swearing in ceremony.
Barbosa as Supreme Court president "has a strong symbolic impact for Brazilian blacks," Valter Silveiro, coordinator of the Center for Afro-Brazilian Studies of the University of Sao Carlos, said. "The new generations of blacks will have the opportunity that my generation never had ? of seeing a black man presiding over one of the three branches of government."
Silveiro said Barbosa's history, background and achievements "strengthen affirmative action programs that try to increase the presence of blacks in the country's universities."
Barbosa was born in 1954 in the small town of Paracatu in Minas Gerais state, where his father worked as a bricklayer.
When he was 16 Barbosa went to the capital, Brasilia, to study. He worked as a cleaner and a typesetter at the Senate to pay for his studies at the University of Brasilia's law school.
After graduating he was hired by the Foreign Ministry and served three years at the Brazilian Embassy in Finland.
A former federal prosecutor, Barbosa taught law at Rio de Janeiro State University and was a visiting scholar at the Human Rights Institute of Columbia University's law school in New York and the UCLA law school in California.

Despite headwinds, investor appetite is so far healthy for China?s YY Inc. as it debuts on the Nasdaq today. This year has been difficult for internet IPOs, and Chinese tech companies have encountered major investor skepticism in the wake of high-profile accounting controversies.
The social media and gaming platform was trading at $11.43 at 11:15 am EST, up from its IPO price?of $10.50.
YY is attempting the first IPO of a Chinese company since April and priced its shares at the lower end of an earlier stated range of $10.50 to $12.50.??The number of Chinese IPOs in the US has gone from 41 in 2010 to 12 in 2011. In 2012 there has only been one, not counting YY?s: Vipshop Holdings, a flash sale website that raised almost 40% less than it sought. Other Chinese companies like China Auto and Shanda Cloudery had to scrap their plans for IPOs because of poor investor sentiment.
What?s the reason for the icy welcome? Investors have been wary of the transparency and quality of Chinese companies after a series of accounting scandals hit dozens of Chinese companies that had listed in the US through ?reverse takeovers,? going public via taking over a US shell company. Chinese companies are also hesitant to list overseas and are waiting instead for signs of new policies?from the country?s new leadership team announced last week.
A successful YY IPO could allow other Chinese companies to follow suit and diminish some US investor concerns. So how might YY do?
The company is growing. YY?s free online platform has 400 million registered users who talk with each other via voice, video and text. The company had net income of ?56.0 million ($8.9 million) in the nine months ended September 30, 2012, up from a loss of ?83.2 million in 2011, according to its prospectus. It?claims to have a market share of 84% of the rather niche market of ?online group voice communications in China??in terms of user time.
Fredrik Oqvist, founder of ChinaRAI, a research firm, writes:
Overall this IPO shows some promise. The company itself is solid and has a good reputation in China. The real question is if it can actually buck not one, but two trends of failing IPOs, those associated with tech and China. I?m quietly optimistic the company will do well? However, given the recent history of these IPOs a large pop on day one is probably a bit too much to hope for.
Concerns about YY include the fact that it only became profitable this year. From 2009 to 2011 (the company was founded in 2008), the company?s losses were ?50 million to ?80 million. Also, YY?is dependent on its games services, where users buy tokens to play. Its games component was 42.3% of total revenue for the year through the end of September. Other major Chinese internet companies like Tencent and Qihoo also host web games. If YY?s relationship with outside game developers falters and affects its pricing or selection, the entire business will feel it.
Also,?the corporate?structure?(p.5) will?put off some investors. A dual stock class structure means that existing shareholders will control 98.3% of votes in YY after the IPO, leaving public investors just 1.7%.
YY itself names key risks to investors in its prospectus (p. 16), including its ability to continue to entice users to pay fees (what it calls internet value-added service, or IVAS):
Our business plan relies heavily upon increased revenues from IVAS and online advertising, and our ability to successfully monetize our user base and products and services, and we may not succeed in any of these respects?
We have experienced a period of significant rapid growth and expansion that has placed? significant strain on our management and resources. We cannot assure you that this level of significant growth will be sustainable or achieved at all in the future.

Your heartburn continues to be kicking in as of late. It?s been an off and on thing with you for most in your life, and you will or might possibly not have already taken the visit to the pharmacy to get some antacid tablets. Regardless of how much relief you obtain temporarily, you want to just be able to avoid having any acid reflux disorder or heartburn initially.
Is it your diet? Do you need to start exercising more or sleep at an incline? Have you been getting this acid reflux disease because of a more severe health issue which you aren?t aware of? I really can?t tell you for sure, but I can share with you some of the simplest ways to deal with acid reflux disease. From natural options to simple changes in diet or lifestyle, I?ve learned enough regarding it all inside my own experiences to supply some insights that you can employ to absolve your acid reflux disorder and heartburn forever.
Exactly What Causes Reflux and Heartburn? Acid reflux is made up of stomach acids, munchies being regurgitated from the stomach or higher into your esophagus, frequently even your throat in severe cases. A little-known fact relating to this common ailment is that it is quite commonly caused by a lack of acids inside your stomach, not an excessive amount.
Without enough hydrochloric acid inside your stomach, the things which you eat is not digested properly. These foods and drinks sit with your stomach dissolving very slowly, struggling to continue to the next stage of digestion. This slow kind of digestion that happens when your stomach is close to acid creates a ton of gas build-up. This gas travels upwards, carrying with it food, drink, and even small amounts of your stomach acid.
Interestingly enough, ?antacids? and a lot other prescribed drugs for heartburn or acid reflux or heartburn weaken or dilute the acidity in your stomach. You might not feel any pain for a time, but this is just making the situation worse with time. If you ask me, I would suggest that you just avoid letting your physician give you anything for your acid reflux disease woes if you do not have tried absolutely anything else I am gonna go over.
What to Do
Diet
Your weight loss program is the first thing which you should look at. Avoid overly spicy or salty foods when possible. Choose lean cuts of meat and try to avoid using pepper or any seasoning which you find to help with your reflux. Really, the simplest way to develop a healthy, anti-heartburn diet for yourself is to get to find out your own body and discover what foods appear to trigger it. A good way of accomplishing this is to help keep a log of what you eat and note every time you feel your heartburn start working.
Eating late into the evening or retiring flat after you consume is another great way to stir up some painful, burning heartburn. Do everything you are able to to avoid this.
Improving Digestion
As mentioned before, your gastrointestinal system is what primarily causes the feelings of heartburn. A natural remedy known as Stops Acid Reflux uses using apple cider vinegar mixed with a few other natural ingredients to really add a certain form of acidity for your stomach. As a matter of fact, that is the only remedy for acid reflux out there that can say it?ll work in just 60 seconds. It truly boggles my thoughts when I take into consideration how relatively unknown this device is when when compared with other stuff on the market that doesn?t work half also.
This remedy is the perfect answer for people who need the pain and discomfort to stop now, yet it?s a very good idea to also create a few changes in your daily habits. Not only will it make the acid reflux disorder roll around less often, you?ll simply feel better and look better.
Exercise
You should research going out for the walk every day or afternoon. Taking a 30 minute walk after enjoying dinner usually helps a bit if you receive nighttime acid reflux, and about any exercise at all will increase your body?s ability to maintain heartburn from happening on its own.
Changes to Lifestyle
Messing your health by using tobacco is not something that you should be impressed by, and it may very well be the smoking at fault again should you be having acid reflux disease that you?ll be able to?t get rid of. Some brands of tobacco will likely cause worse heartburn, so you may consider changing brands if you?re not going to quit or reduce.
It may take you serious amounts of get your health totally in check, heartburn and acid reflux disorder included, but by using a natural remedy like the one mentioned above to cope with the pain is exponentially smarter than adding fuel towards the flames with unhealthy prescribed drugs. This is the best bit of advice that I can get for anyone working with this terrible problem.

Holidays are a time of kindness, of giving, of gratitude, of sharing with friends and family. But let?s face it, they?re also a time of great stress. Take all the expectations we have for having the best holidays ever: the perfect gifts, the perfect outfit, the perfect meal, the most satisfying family gatherings and the pressure is on. When we?re stressed about the holiday rush, who is there to greet us? All those cookie trays and eggnog. And the worry about how much weight we are putting on may drive us back for another serving. How do you avoid holiday stress from literally weighing on us??Armed with a few powerful strategies, we can combat those fears and really enjoy ourselves.
Pause and Relabel: Our first reaction to stress is that unreliable, exaggerating voice of worry which says things like, ?you?re going to ruin your waistline if you eat.? ?If you eat at all, you?re over eating!? Remember, that voice is our built in alarm system ? all it knows to say is bad news or the worst case scenario. If we listen to it, either we?ll be miserable depriving ourselves, or, when we don?t, we?ll be miserable thinking that we?re ruining our diets and our figures. Neither option helps and may make us feel like turning off the alarm altogether, eating recklessly and regretting later. Alternative? When you hear that extreme voice, stamp it! Relabel it! It?s the Grinch, It?s the Alarmist, It?s Your Critical Mother-in-Law. Downgrade the message and get real.
Get Specific: What?s really the problem that?s setting off the worry alarms? You know what you need to do: it?s not that eating anything and everything is the problem, likely there are certain high risk foods that you should either avoid or have in moderation, or even in small amounts. Identify your weak spots: is it a certain food, or is it return trips to the buffet table? Once you identify the problem, you?re ready for step three.
Optimize: Options in how to think of your situation: If, ? I?m going to ruin my progress over the holidays? is your starting thought ? look at it from different angles: ?I am afraid that I?m going to ruin my progress, but I have choices.? ?I don?t have control over what?s served, but I do have control over what I choose to eat.? ?I can still have a great time even if I am watching my food choices.?
Options of how you want to handle your situation: do you want to give yourself splurge tickets a few days of the holidays and then try to stick with sensible eating the other days? Do you want to work on portion control at gatherings? Do you want to eat healthy at home first and then make good selections at the party?
Create a panel in your head of other trusted voices you want to call on instead of the relentless mantra of the Grinch: ?No Carbs! No Carbs!?? Who is your dieting guru? Call on that person in your head and ask him or her to ?weigh in? on your choices. Chances are they will have much more realistic advice than the Grinch.
Mobilize: Now you?re ready to choose your plan and take action, but be reasonable with yourself. Give yourself credit for the days that you meet your goal, and give yourself some slack about the days you don?t. Link up with a buddy who is also working on healthy eating during the holidays and check in by text each day, exchange supportive messages. Make sure you have plenty of healthy recipes and food choices at home so that you don?t feel deprived by what you didn?t?eat at a family gathering.
You don?t have to surrender to your anxiety, use it as a helpful signal in moderation that you need to make the plan ? but the details are yours. Happy holidays!!

GETTYSBURG, Pa. (AP) ? With his new film about the 16th president in theaters, two-time Academy Award winning director Steven Spielberg was to make the keynote address during ceremonies that celebrate the 149th anniversary of "The Gettysburg Address."
Spielberg's remarks at Soldier's National Cemetery in Gettysburg on Monday were to be accompanied by a recitation of the famous speech by a Lincoln re-enactor. Sixteen citizenship candidates from 11 countries were scheduled to take the oath of allegiance.
The event at Gettysburg National Military Park was expected to take about an hour, and was free. Previous speakers include presidents Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower, and former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge.
Carl Sandberg, in his biography of Lincoln, said it was a speech that conveyed the message that democracy was worth fighting for.
"It had the dream touch of vast and furious events epitomized for any foreteller to read what was to come," Sandberg wrote. "His cadences sang the ancient song that where there is freedom men have fought and sacrificed for it, and that freedom is worth men's dying for."
Gettysburg is where the U.S. military was able to stop an invasion of the North by Confederate troops under Gen. Robert E. Lee, a major turning point of the American Civil War. The 150th year since that battle will be marked in 2013, particularly around the battle's anniversary in early July.
"Lincoln," which stars Daniel Day-Lewis in the title role, concentrates on the period leading up to the president's assassination in 1865.
Lincoln gave the three-minute speech, which famously begins with the phrase, "four score and seven years ago," at the dedication of the cemetery four months after the battle.

But...there's a hidden twist.
When an internet marketing expert does a product launch, do they pay out 100% commissions? Definitely not, because they need to pay out affiliate commissions. And it's often the same 20 people that make any money off of the product launches since they are the top dogs in this industry and they have thousands of people on their lists to market to.
So most internet marketers join a company and an online marketing program of some sorts, then proceed to try to make money on line. They end up crashing and burning as it's not as easy as the "gurus" make it out to be.
Why then join Empower Network?
Number one the Empower Network pays out 100% commissions on every sale, and the money is immediately released to your merchant account. You need not wait weeks for your commission checks to arrive. This means that you could literally be in profit state from the 1st person that you sign up.
In the first 9 days alone they rewarded over $500,000 in instant affiliate commissions. That is absolutely crazy!
New members can get started for just $25 and currently have the earning potential to make up to $625 per sale that's directly deposited into their bank accounts.
Here's where the magic begins with having Empower Network blog. Their blogging platform is built on an aged website that already has authority on Google which means that your blog posts have a better probability of ranking higher on the search engines than with a blog that doesn't have much authority.

Here's where you might see Empower Network articles online:
A lot of big time leaders and companies in the internet marketing industry may be eliminated by the Empower Network because they aren't going to embrace what's happening. They are fixed in their own technique of doing business and their businesses are likely to be severely affected because many people are going to join the Empower Network because they aren't earning any money with their present company.
It pains me to say this since I have so much respect for the leaders and companies in our industry but the unpleasant truth is that the Empower Network has completely changed the network marketing industry forever and it's time to accept "Who's Moved Your Cheese" before you lose out.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Cisco Systems Inc., the world's largest maker of computer networking gear, said Tuesday that U.S. companies are starting to spend again, helping Cisco find more solid footing after some shaky months early this year.
Cisco said its earnings rose 18 percent in the latest quarter, propelled by a renewed willingness by large U.S. businesses to invest in big-ticket networking gear, even as the federal government continued to hold back. Orders from large business customers in the U.S. rose 9 percent from a year ago.
That helped make up for continued weakness in Europe, where economic turmoil is still causing a big drop-off in orders.
"The U.S. has to lead the total globe out of this slowdown. It's not going to come from Europe. While we were all hopeful about emerging countries, they just aren't going to be strong enough," CEO John Chambers said.
The company's stock rose $1.19, or 7.1 percent, to $18.04 in extended trading Tuesday.
Cisco made $2.1 billion, or 39 cents per share, in its fiscal first quarter, which ended Oct. 27. That compares with $1.8 billion, or 33 cents per share, in the same period a year ago.
Excluding the cost of stock-based compensation and certain other items, Cisco would have earned 48 cents per share. On that basis, Cisco's earnings were 2 cents above the average analyst estimate, according to FactSet.
Revenue rose 5.5 percent to $11.9 billion, beating Wall Street estimates. Excluding the acquisition of video technology company NDS, which closed just before the end of the quarter, revenue would have risen 4 percent.
The San Jose, Calif., company forecast earnings for the current quarter of 47 cents to 48 cents per share. Analysts have been expecting 48 cents per share. The company projected revenue of $11.9 billion to $12.1 billion, bracketing the average analyst estimate.
As has been the trend this year, sales of Cisco's core products, routers and switches, were weak, while some up-and-coming product categories such as wireless network equipment and servers for data centers sold briskly. Cisco's service segment also continued to be strong, with revenue growing 12 percent from a year ago, as customers ask Cisco to build their networks for them.

Seydoux perfectly captures the anger and self-defeat of ill-educated, hedonistic, man-chasing young women who live on the fringes.
L?a Seydoux fulfills Louise, and Kacey Mottet Klein, as Simon, is one more to join the pantheon of film's excellent child actors.
Haunting and sad. And absolutely worth seeing.
The chemistry between the two leads is a razor's-edge dance: feral, childish, tender and always complex.
Movies about wayward kids are a European specialty. The new film "Sister" deepens the specialty.
The influence of Belgian masters Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne's documentary eye for youth on the margins is evident in Ursula Meier's calmly heartbreaking drama.
Emotionally engaging and impeccably crafted
Klein and Seydoux give such naturalistic performances that they're never overwhelmed by the spectacle.
"Sister" is loose and episodic, but held together with nicely sketched characters.
[A]voids bathos. . .reveals unexpected depth in a heartbreaking bond. . . Different classes conflict [in] adjacent spaces . . .in spare, realistic Dardennes' style.
Meier draws out wonderfully naturalistic performances from her young stars, with Mottet Klein particularly good as the young roustabout Simon ...
It comes over like a subtle short story and is well acted.
Meier's portrait of Simon ... is richly atmospheric and never sentimental.
An enigmatic, heartfelt account of a vulnerable young boy's yearning for a better life.
Most intriguing is how the writers and director have transformed what's essentially a rather dark, bleak story into something involving and emotionally resonant, all without ever turning sentimental.
It is an interesting and well-made movie, though with an uncertain ending.
Sister gradually reveals pattern in its tapestry of everyday life.
An expert piece of storytelling with a host of strong character turns and thematic depth to burn.
A healthy seam of mischief helps cut through the occasionally rote social comment.
An emotionally engaging, beautifully shot and impressively directed Dardennes-esque French drama with a superb script and excellent performances from Kacey Mottet Klein and L?a Seydoux.
An unusual, involving, slightly strained character study from Ursula Meier, the French director of 2008's satirical dystopia, 'Home'.
'Sister' often recalls the recent work of the Dardenne brothers of Belgium and that landmark of the French new wave, Francois Truffaut's 'The 400 Blows' (1959).
Psychologically complex. You may be shocked, you may be moved, but you won't easily forget "Sister."

ScienceDaily (Nov. 7, 2012) ? Professor Alexander Bentley and colleagues found that words commonly used by scientists when discussing climate science -- such as 'biodiversity', 'global', and 'isotopes' -- follow fashion cycles in public usage as the usage of such words by scientists diffuses into use by non-scientists. According to the authors, this effect may contribute to the impact of climate research on societal perceptions.
The researchers used Google's 'Ngram' database, which at present scans through over five million books published in seven languages since the 1500s, to represent public discourse (not scientific discourse) concerning climate science. Since the database was only unveiled a couple years ago, this research is among the very first studies of its kind.
They found that, while there is a continual output of climate science, there are pronounced fashion waves in public usage of the main keywords associated with this science. These waves vary in length, but the median duration is about a human generation (2-3 decades).
These fashion waves can be modelled in a very straightforward manner, so they ought to be predictable in some sense. Thus, a simple model of word-usage trends could be used to inform efforts for better communication, the researchers argue. Recognizing which words are spread by diffusion, along with the ideas they represent, could help campaigns improve social learning, rather than simply expecting an audience to adopt a message because it is scientifically sound.
Professor Bentley said: "Since the impact of climate science is so inherently linked to public acceptance -- or denial -- of the evidence for climate change, we suggest that our study provides a crucial first step toward gauging public response over the long term.
"Ideally, the methods we present -- applied to new sources of 'big data' like Google Ngrams -- can be used to prepare for changes in public opinion over the generations on matters of global importance."
