Furloughs Begin This Week For Civilllian Military Workers (VIDEO)

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (www.TheIndyChannel.com) - Thousands of Hoosier paychecks are about to get smaller as the federal government rolls out mandatory furloughs for all military civilians.

The furlough amounts to a 20 percent pay cut per person for the next three months.

The impact will be felt by many Hoosier families.

Brenda Grundy has worked for the Department of Defense in Indianapolis for 35 years. She had never been furloughed until now.

Starting Monday, she and 4,000 others at the Defense Finance and Accounting Service will be required to take one day off a week without pay for almost the next three months.

?The government worker is already burdened with the fact that we are not getting pay raises, that we are not keeping up with the economy and now you want to further add burden onto us by furloughing us,? Grundy said.

More than 470 civilian employees at Grissom Air Reserve Base in Miami County are facing the same fate.

?You lose one day of work for each worker each work week. It is a major challenge and something that we?ve not had to do before,? Gary Lockhard said.

The furloughs are results of the March sequester to reduce the federal deficit.

The Department of Defense will save $1.8 billion by telling civilian workers to stay home, but that is only a small fraction of the $40 billion they are required to cut.

The original plan was for civilian military workers to take 22 furlough days. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel recently reduced that number to 11 days.
