Planets found at dawn of universe, but their existence is a mystery

Scientists have found two planets orbiting a star that formed only a billion years after the big bang. But the universe had few planet-making elements then, so how did the planets form?

Two planets from a period near the dawn of the cosmos are hinting that there may be more than one way to sow the seeds of planet formation.

A team of astronomers reports it has found two planets orbiting a star some 376 light-years from Earth in the constellation Cetus. The team estimates that the star is 12.8 billion years old, indicating that the star and its planets formed only a billion years after the universe itself emerged in what astrophysicists have dubbed the big bang.

By contrast, the solar system humans inhabit formed about 4.6 billion years ago.

The results, set for publication in an upcoming issue of the monthly journal Astronomy and Astrophysics, represent what the study's lead scientist, Johny Setiawan, dubs ?an archaeological find in our own backyard.?

Indeed, the discovery is ?remarkable since the planetary system most likely belongs to the first generation of planetary systems in the Milky Way,? the team writes.

The star, HIP 11952, has 83 percent of the sun's mass and 1.6 times the sun's radius. It appears to be on the doorstep of its death throes as a red giant, when its core's supply of hydrogen fuel hits ?empty.? The core collapses, heats, and provides the energy for hydrogen remaining in the star's outer shell to begin fusing into helium. The star brightens, and its atmosphere heats and expands far beyond its current reach.

Orbiting in the path of that expansion are two planets: one with 2.9 times Jupiter's mass orbiting HIP 11952 once every 290 days; the other with 78 percent of Jupiter's mass orbiting the star once every 6.95 days.

Therein lies an intrigue: How did such planets form?

For years, astronomers have held that the stars most likely to host planets are, like the sun, enriched with elements heavier than the hydrogen they burn for fuel ? elements such as carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, calcium, and silicon, for example. These are the raw materials for rocky cores around which planets form.

But these elements weren't around in the big bang's aftermath. They are forged in the fusion furnaces inside stars, which hurl them into interstellar space through explosions known as supernovae, as well as through less-violent processes.?In other words, it took many generations of stars to build the universe's current inventory of these heavier elements, which astronomers dump into one bin labeled ?metals.??

HIP 11952, having formed relatively soon after the big bang, is in scientific parlance, "metal poor." It has?a far smaller inventory of these elements than one would expect for a star with planets.

The number of planets that have been found orbiting metal-poor stars is small. So far, astronomers have discovered more than 760 planets orbiting other stars. The two planets orbiting HIP 11952 bring to seven the number of planets found at metal-poor stars.

While HIP 11952 isn't the most metal-deficient star astronomers have observed, it is the poorest yet to host planets ? opening a window on processes by which the universe's earliest planets formed, the team holds.

One explanation for that process suggests that planets in a metal-poor disk could begin to form in much that same way a star does: A passing star's gravity may perturb a second star's disk of dust and gas, generating regions of different densities. The densest portions could have enough gravity associated with them to begin a process of collapse and accretion of additional gas, forming a planet.

Another explanation holds that the embryos of giant planets may, under the right conditions, undergo a second, rapid collapse that brings them into a smaller size, comparable to the planets found around HIP 11952.

Dr. Setiawan's team says it hopes the discovery of more planets orbiting metal-poor stars will help researchers find the most likely mechanism for building the universe's earliest planets.

Setiawan is a researcher with the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg, Germany.

Canada kicks US in Olympic qualifying

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Doneil Henry and Lucas Cavallini each scored goals as Canada beat the United States 2-0 Saturday night for its first win over the Americans since 1992 in the CONCACAF men's Olympic qualifying tournament.

The Americans could have clinched a berth in the semifinals on March 31 in Kansas City, Kan. Those winners qualify for the London games. Instead, they now must beat El Salvador, a 4-0 winner over Cuba earlier Saturday, on Monday night to advance.

The Americans came in 4-1-2 all-time against Canada in this tournament.

The Canadians played a scoreless tie against El Salvador to open the Group A tournament, and they stayed just as strong defensively against the Americans.

Henry headed the ball off a corner kick in the 58th minute, and Cavallini scored off a diving header in the 83rd minute for a 2-0 lead.

The U.S. squad played without Juan Agudelo, who U.S. Soccer officials announced before the game tore cartilage in his left knee in Thursday night's 6-0 win over Cuba and the forward will rejoin the New York Red Bulls on Sunday with team doctors figuring out a recovery timetable. Agudelo, who scored a goal Thursday night, watched from the bench.

U.S. coach Caleb Porter will not be able to replace Agudelo on the roster since the Americans still have 19 players available and must get to 18 before an injury replacement is allowed.

Teal Bunbury, whose father played for the Canadian national team, got the start along with Jorge Villafana as they replaced Kofi Sarkodie and Agudelo.

The teams played to a scoreless first half, and Porter substituted Joe Gyau for Joe Corona, who had three goals in Thursday night's 6-0 win over Cuba. Terrence Boyd substituted for Bunbury in the 56th minute.

The Americans thought they had gone ahead in the 48th minute when Ike Opara headed a Freddy Adu free kick into the goal. But Opara was called offsides.

They had a great chance to tie it up when Jorge Villafana found Adu for a kick on goal only to have keeper Michal Misiewicz deflect it and smother the ball. ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkish Kurd militants threatened on Thursday to turn all Kurdish populated areas into a "war zone" if Turkish troops entered Syria, a sign the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) which has allies in Syria may be taking sides in the conflict there.

A renewed alliance between Damascus and the PKK would anger Turkey and could prompt it to take an even stronger line against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad over his brutal repression of anti-government protesters.

PKK field commander Murat Karayilan said Turkey was preparing the ground for an intervention in Syria.

"The Turkish state is planning an intervention against our people," the Europe-based Firat news agency, close to the militants, quoted him as saying.

"Let me state clearly, if the Turkish state intervenes against our people in western Kurdistan, all of Kurdistan will turn into a war zone," he said.

Western Kurdistan is the term Kurdish nationalists use to describe Kurdish areas of northeast Syria, while by Kurdistan they mean the Kurdish areas of Turkey, Iraq, Syria and Iran.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said last week that setting up a "safe zone" or a "buffer zone" along the border with Syria to protect civilians from Assad's forces was among the options being considered should the stream of refugees turn into a flood.

Setting up such a zone would involve troops entering Syria to secure territory. Turkey has turned sharply against its former friend Assad and has taken a lead in trying to forge international agreement on the need for stronger action on Syria.

The Assad regime had denied some stateless Kurds Syrian nationality documents but it has made concessions since the start of the uprising to ease unrest in Kurdish areas.

Some Arabs are concerned that the Kurds, mostly based in northeast Syria on the borders with Turkey and Iraq, secretly seek a separate state that includes cross border territories.

Social Video Channel YouTube is now the second largest search engine, according to comScore, with 50% more searches than Yahoo! And 180% more searches than Bing. YouTube has 300 million visitors every month who watch more than 12 billion videos.

As a social medium, YouTube features user generated content and facilitates video sharing, commenting, rating and the ability to create special interest channels that attract friends and subscribers who share interests and
can interact with each other. Users look for videos to entertain and inform. Businesses participate by providing
answers to users? questions, how-to content, product reviews, instruction, expert opinions, etc. It is a forum for
establishing ?social authority? that businesses seek for the topical areas most related to their services or products.

Andrew Brandt: Peyton picks his place

In the story of the 2012 offseason, the Peyton Predicament is coming to a conclusion. Peyton Manning has agreed to join the Denver Broncos, setting in motion movement to come for Tim Tebow. Here are ten thoughts on Peyton's soft landing in Denver after his turbulent exit from Indianapolis:

1. It is not always the case, but in this situation, the first visit mattered. Of the dozen teams contacting Manning following his release from the Colts, he chose the Broncos as his first meeting. And they were also the last, watching him throw at Duke on Friday. First in, last out was telling in this case.

2. My sense is Broncos president John Elway was a major factor for a couple of reasons. First, he may be the only team executive with the experience and gravitas that Manning can say "I want to hear what this guy has to tell me." In other cases, Manning would have respect for his bosses, but not respect borne of someone who has been through similar experiences and more. I also think that a laid-back defensive coach in John Fox was a plus to Manning. Fox will not get in Manning's way.

3. As to Elway and Fox's comments about Tebow during his extraordinary run this year, what else could they say? They couldn't state "We are happy with Tim, unless someone like Peyton Manning comes along!" Not only was Tebow taking the country by storm but he was their quarterback for the foreseeable future. My sense is that Elway and Fox had to know there was a strong possibility that Manning would be released, as the contract was set up for his release with the Colts careening towards Andrew Luck.

4. As to Denver having an advantage over other teams with Cap room, that may have helped but I don't think it was a major factor. Believe me: Cap room or not, the 49ers, Titans, and other teams would have done what was necessary to sign Manning.

5. Speaking of finances, I found it interesting that Peyton's decision was made in advance of instructing his agent Tom Condon to negotiate a contract. Of course, my sense is that the parameters of the deal -- reportedly five years for $95 million -- were in place from all finalist-teams prior to making a choice. Although detailed negotiations did not commence, these teams were "pre-qualified" to be finalists.

6. The contract price would not have been a surprise to anyone here. As I noted here, this was never going to be an "incentive-laden contract." It will be interesting to see the structure of the deal in terms of risk allocation: How are the Broncos protected if Peyton is compromised and cannot play? How much is completely guaranteed? How much in the early years of the deal? And how much upside potential is there if he becomes the Peyton Manning of old?

7. Athletes are known to say that "It's not about the money," which usually means "It's all about the money". Here, however, it truly may not be about the money. Manning had several teams prepared to make a serious contract offer, four neck surgeries and all. Indeed, Titans' owner Bud Adams said he was willing to "do what it takes" to sign Manning, words that surely made the Titans front office quiver. In the end, however, Manning did not leverage that statement to get a mega-contract from the Titans.

8. Interestingly, the person negotiating the contract for the Broncos is Mike Sullivan, the former agent who certainly knows what players look for in contracts. Mike and I negotiated Aaron Rodgers' first contract together, and I am proud he is following in my footsteps from the agent to the team side.

9. As I have said before, the impact of Luck cannot be overestimated. If the Colts did not have a grooved path to Luck, they would have had to pay Manning his $28 million option bonus and he would have been their quarterback. Can you imagine the Colts with, say, the 3rd pick in the Draft cutting Peyton Manning to take an offensive lineman? No chance. Had the Colts won one more game, Manning would still be in Indianapolis and Tebow would be the Broncos quarterback for the foreseeable future.

10. Speaking of the Colts, it will soon sink in with their fans that they will get nothing in return for the loss of Peyton. No draft picks and no compensatory draft picks. They released Peyton Manning, entitling them to no compensation. That is sad for those fans.

The chase is over; the press conference is set. Colts out, Broncos in. The business of football continues.

Warming Antarctic brings changes to penguin breeding cycles

ScienceDaily (Mar. 21, 2012) ? Three penguin species that share the Western Antarctic Peninsula for breeding grounds have been affected in different ways by the higher temperatures brought on by global warming, according to Stony Brook University Ecology and Evolution Assistant Professor Heather Lynch and colleagues. The work by Lynch and her team is contained in three papers that have been published online in Polar Biology, Ecology and Marine Ecology Progress Series (MEPS).

Lynch and her colleagues used a combination of field work and, increasingly, satellite imagery to track colonies of three penguin species -- Ad?lie, chinstrap and gentoo. The Ad?lie and chinstrap migrate to the peninsula to breed, while the gentoo are year-round residents.

The Antarctic is considered one of the world's most rapidly warming regions. Warmer temperatures move up the breeding cycle, causing the penguins to lay their eggs earlier. The resident gentoo population is able to adapt more quickly and advance their "clutch initiation" by almost twice as much as the other species. Lynch believes this may allow them to better compete for the best nesting space. The Ad?lie and chinstrap are unaware of the local conditions until they arrive to breed and have not been able to advance their breeding cycles as rapidly.

In addition, the gentoo prefer areas with less sea ice, and have been able to migrate further south into the Antarctic as the sea ice shrinks. The chinstrap and Ad?lie species rely more heavily on the abundance of Antarctic krill, which require sea ice for their lifecycle.

The result -- the gentoo numbers are increasing while the other two species have noticeably dwindling populations on the Antarctic Peninsula.

Professor Lynch will speak about her research and advances in the use of satellite imagery to track penguin populations as part of "Polar Climate Change Research: A Workshop for Educators" at the Charles B. Wang Center at Stony Brook University on April 10-11, 2012. The workshop, sponsored by the joint BNL-SBU Center for Impacts of Regional Climate Change (CIRCC), is designed to give high school science teachers the tools they need to teach about climate change in the Polar regions.

The Art of Teaching ? Technical Writing Tips for the Oil Patch

I was reading the newspaper and ran across a quote that gave me pause and got me thinking. (Oh, geez, not again!)

Sir Ken Robinson, a British educator who moved to Los Angeles after being knighted by Queen Elizabeth for his contributions to education, was saying how schools today crank out students in an assembly-line fashion like Model T cars. We don?t let students discover their innate talents or what they love to do so they can be fulfilled in their life and career.

Sir Ken said with our focus on standardized tests we are ?fostering a culture of conformity and compliance, and we?re undermining the quality of teaching. We?re reducing teachers to a delivery system when really, teaching is an art form.?

What does this have to do with writing, you ask? For one thing, such ?skill and drill? can kill the desire to write beautiful prose. But more to the point, all writing ? even this piece ? has the option of being either a delivery system or an art form.

I often get the most feedback on my Tips of the Day when I hop up on my soapbox and speak, er, write from the heart, rather than spell out the dry definitions and categorize the parts of speech. (Those I generally have to look up, and I include them mainly to look like I know what I?m talking about.)

But think about it. When you are writing your weekly status report, you are teaching somebody what you did and why it?s important. You can do this in terse bullet points, or you can make it interesting ? even exciting ? so the reader will want to open the file to see the results of what you did last week.

How about when you are writing a scope of work or field development plan? The facilities should come alive in the reader?s mind as you describe all the parts and schedules and economics. And when you?re capturing best practices and rules of thumb, you can include the true stories about the successes and failures that put a face on the lessons learned, making them come alive.

When you are writing, you are teaching. And teaching should be an art form, not a delivery system.

But if the first Hunger Games book introduces some awkward elements for a teen-friendly, mainstream movie, the third in the series, called Mockingjay, will force filmmakers to turn massacre and despair into blockbuster entertainment. In the finale to the series [spoiler alert], the children aren't sent to their death in an arena, but they are lured to their deaths with booby-trapped toys that detonate in their tiny, waiting fingers. To make matters worse, the trilogy's teenage heroine, Katniss Everdeen, is caught in the blast. She wakes to find most of her body covered in burns, in a pain-medicated fog that barely holds the agony at bay. Our heroine spends the last act of the book in a drugged, self-loathing stupor, and the tidy, dramatic structure of the first two novels?a teenage love triangle, the pre-games hype and preparations, the games themselves?is made over into a bleak story of urban warfare. For good or bad, it's a jarring transition. Imagine the Twilight series ending with all of the werewolves committing ritual suicide, or Harry Potter landing in a concentration camp for young wizards.

Charleston International Film Festival announces dates (Update ...

This year?s schedule will be showcasing over 80 films from 13 countries, most of which from the U.S. with an exhilarating 20+ from filmmakers in the southeast region and the Lowcountry. The official selections represent the pinnacle of independent filmmaking talent from around the world and range in categories from features, shorts, documentaries, and animations of all genres.

The Opening Night events will kick off on April 11th at 7 p.m. at the Sottile Theatre (44 George Street) with the Sundance award-winning feature film Robot and Frank. Set in the near future, curmudgeonly Frank (a retired cat burglar) has two grown kids who are concerned that he can no longer live alone and are tempted to place him in a nursing home. However, Frank's son chooses another option: against the old man's wishes, he buys a walking, talking humanoid robot programmed to improve Frank's physical and mental health. What follows is a sometimes hilarious and sometimes heartbreaking story about finding friends and family in the most unexpected places. Robot and Frank features an award winning cast including Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon), James Marsden (X-Men and Hairspray), Liv Tyler (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy) and Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking and Thelma & Louise).

The majority of films in this year?s festival are premieres and haven?t been seen by anyone in South Carolina, and in some cases the world. All films will be screened in blocks consisting of two or more films.
