12-Year-Old Iceberg's Death Caught on Camera (SPACE.com)

In mid-December, a NASA satellite snapped an image of the disintegration of a large iceberg that first broke away from Antarctica nearly 12 years ago, and has been wandering the Southern Ocean ever since.

It's not unusual for icebergs to survive for up to a quarter century if they stay near their birthplace, in the frigid waters surrounding Antarctica; yet if they stray too far north, the massive chunks of ice can quickly disappear, said Ted Scambos, a glaciologist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

In March 2000, the largest iceberg ever measured broke away from the Ross Ice Shelf, a massive plain of floating ice that clings to the coastline of Antarctica. The iceberg , dubbed B-15, was a whopping 170 miles (270 kilometers) long and 25 miles (40 km) wide? ?? nearly the size of Connecticut. Over time, the iceberg broke into smaller pieces.

One of those pieces, known as B-15J, was spotted about 1,700 miles (2,700 km) southeast of New Zealand on Dec. 19.

At the beginning of November, B-15J was roughly 12 miles (20 km) across, but has now crumbled to just a few miles breadth as it sails through warmer waters, Scambos told OurAmazingPlanet.

How icebergs are born

Icebergs are birthed by ice shelves, which are the outlets of glaciers and regularly send enormous icebergs floating out to sea in a natural process known as calving.

NASA researchers recently spotted a huge rift in Western Antarctica's Pine Island Glacier ice shelf, and they expect the shelf to calve in the coming months.

Although calving is a natural process, some Antarctic ice shelves?are undergoing rapid, sometimes catastrophic change, and Scambos said that tracking icebergs as they melt is a good proxy for scientists trying to understand what is happening to ice shelves in general in a warming world.

Ice shelves essentially act as doorstops for glaciers. When ice shelves disappear or weaken, glaciers speed up, dumping ever more ice into the ocean and raising global sea levels.

Scambos said B-15J is rapidly disintegrating. "It's similar to what happens to ice shelves when they go through a rapid warming," he said.

Smaller and smaller pieces

"Icebergs do a sort of fast-forward through climate change as they drift northward," Scambos said. "All the things that go on in terms of melting on the underside and melting on the surface, they all happen at high speed and dramatically with these large, tabular bergs." [Images: Antarctica, Iceberg Maker]

Scambos said researchers are trying to get some high-resolution satellite images of B-15J as it melts away, but it's difficult. The iceberg moves between 10 and 15 miles (16 and 24 kilometers) a day, and it's a challenged to aim the right satellite required for such detailed images ? one operated by Taiwan ? at such a small target.

The major pieces of iceberg B-15 have run through most of the alphabet, Scambos said. "It goes to at least B-15X, but the letter pieces are starting to break off into more pieces ? and below 10 kilometers [6 mi] nobody tracks them, so there are literally thousands of pieces of B-15 floating around," he said.

HK builder's investment in Legendary East on hold

(AP) ? A Hong Kong construction company said Friday that a plan to invest $220.5 million in a Hollywood-China movie production venture is on hold because of rocky financial markets.

Paul Y. Engineering Ltd. said it couldn't raise enough money from selling new shares to investors before a year-end deadline for the proposed ? and unlikely ? investment in Legendary East Ltd.

The construction company has said previously that the deal for a 50 percent stake in Legendary East Ltd., which aims to make big budget films for worldwide audiences, was aimed at diversifying its business. Executives believe China's increasingly lucrative film market has great potential.

Chairman James Chiu said although the share sale had a "positive and substantial response" from investors, it was not enough to complete the share placement.

"We anticipate that under the current difficult environment of the capital markets the placing will not be able to close before" the deadline of Dec. 31, 2011, Chiu said.

The company said it will try again in 2012 by working with the partners to modify the structure of the deal.

Under the originally proposed deal, Hollywood production house Legendary Entertainment would have been left with a 40 percent stake in Legendary East while China's Huayi Brothers Media Corp. would have the remaining 10 percent.

Legendary East, a Hong Kong-based venture that was announced in June, plans to make one or two big budget movies a year starting in 2013 for global audiences that are also commercially viable in China. The movies will be mainly in English and feature themes based on Chinese history, mythology or culture.

Legendary Entertainment has produced global blockbusters including "Inception" and the two "Hangover" movies. Huayi releases include the hit Feng Xiaogang disaster epic "Aftershock," the kung fu drama "Shaolin" and the Tsui Hark fantasy epic "Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame."

Chinese box office takings surged 64 percent to $1.5 billion in 2010 and are expected to grow 30 percent this year to $2 billion.

Letter airs harassment claims against HP's ex-CEO

(AP) ? Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Mark Hurd's efforts to impress an HP event hostess included showing her his checking-account balance holding over $1 million, according to a letter detailing the sexual harassment allegations that led to his ouster.

The letter was obtained late Thursday by The Associated Press after the Delaware Supreme Court ruled that Hurd's lawyers, who had attempted to keep it confidential, didn't show that disclosing it would violate California privacy rights. The ruling said information that is only "mildly embarrassing" is not protected from public disclosure.

The letter, it added, does not contain trade secrets about the Palo Alto-based technology company or non-public financial information. Some sentences concerning Hurd's family were ordered redacted.

Celebrity attorney Gloria Allred sent the letter last year on behalf of Jodie Fisher, who was hired as a contract employee to help with HP networking events and who later accused Hurd of sexual harassment.

Although an HP investigation did not find any evidence to support the harassment claim, it uncovered inaccurate expense reports for his outings with Fisher. Hurd was ultimately forced out in August 2010. He now works as co-president at rival Oracle Corp.

Allred alleged in the letter that, while Fisher was ostensibly hired an HP event hostess in late 2007, she was really brought on to accompany Hurd to HP events held out of town. Throughout 2008 and 2009, Hurd made it clear he expected to have a sexual relationship with Fisher, using his "status and authority as CEO of HP," Allred alleged.

Allred claimed that Hurd made several sexual advances toward Fisher, which Fisher rejected. In 2008, while walking with Fisher in Madrid, Hurd stopped at an ATM and showed her his checking-account balance "to impress her," according to the letter.

After Fisher rejected him a final time in October 2009, she was not hired for any future HP events, Allred alleged.

Allred also alleged that in March 2008, Hurd told Fisher that HP was likely to purchase technology services vendor EDS. HP announced the $13 billion acquisition in May of that year.

HP shareholder Ernesto Espinoza had sued to have the letter unsealed. Hurd's attorney, Amy Wintersheimer, said his lawyers had requested that the letter be kept confidential because "it is filled with inaccuracies."

"The truth is, there never was any sexual harassment, which HP's investigation confirmed, and there never was any sexual relationship, which Ms. Fisher has confirmed," Wintersheimer said in a statement.

Both Allred and Hewlett-Packard Co. had no comment on the letter's contents.

Syrian troops kill 3 Lebanese in border incident

Lebanese security officials say Syrian troops opened fire at a car that crossed illegally into northern Lebanon, killing three Lebanese men.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

The shooting came late Tuesday as Arab League observers started a mission in Syria aimed at stopping nine months of bloody clashes during an uprising against the regime.

Some Syrians have fled to Lebanon to escape the fighting, and Syria has complained that weapons are smuggled across its borders. It was not immediately clear if the shooting was related to the uprising in Syria.

Such incidents are not uncommon on the border, since many Lebanese and Syrians cross the border illegally. Several Syrians and Lebanese were killed or wounded in recent border incidents.

Should Microsoft try harder to buy RIM?

Is RIM for sale? No, not really. And it sounds like the executives at the Waterloo-based company don?t really want to be ?for sale,? either. Which is fine, since there are options out there; and there are people who want those options to work out. But, while options are great, there needs to be something actually done about it. Just talking, or saying how you want to do it all on your own can only get you so far. Especially when you?re doing it on your own and nothing seems to be working out. So, what needs to change? A change of management? Maybe. (Probably.) But, maybe it?s something bigger. Maybe Nokia and Microsoft should try a bit harder to buy the BlackBerry manufacturer.

If you?ll recall, a report came out that Microsoft and Nokia had jointly considered buying Research In Motion sometime over the summer of this year. While it would seem logical for Microsoft/Nokia to buy RIM, it apparently didn?t work out. There are probably plenty of reasons out there, but the most talked-about one is how RIM just decided that they weren?t for sale, and wouldn?t be for sale. Fantastic news, as long as we go with the idea that RIM has a trick up their sleeve, which they will unveil with a burst of energy next year. Early next year, that is. Anything later, like near the ?late 2012? launch of the first BB10 devices and it?s too late.

And maybe that?s why the purchase by Microsoft is actually really, really important. We?ll get to the details here in a moment, but let?s take a swing at the bigger picture first. RIM isn?t Microsoft. And how I mean that is that time isn?t on RIM?s side. At all. People have a different outlook on the future of Research In Motion, and it?s not this ?slow and steady wins the race? approach at all. People are talking about RIM?s downfall, and it?s apparently imminent.

So, those details I mentioned above. Truthfully, I think Tim Bajarin put it pretty clearly at Techpinions: RIM still has assets that the corporate world wants, like security. Research In Motion still has BlackBerry Messenger, which is still the staple of that instant messenger-like texting service. Sure, there are alternatives, but BBM is still the most talked-about. It?s still the most trusted within the corporate world, and it?s something that RIM truly does have up their sleeve. It?s this service, connected with the security that RIM offers, that the corporate world still craves, and that the BlackBerry name still offers.

But obviously Apple and even Microsoft are encroaching on that territory, and fiercely. So how does RIM get it back? Honestly, there might not be any coming back for RIM. Not on their own. The company has tried so hard to find this sweet spot between the corporate world and the general consumer that they?ve lost their footing altogether. That?s why a ?bail-out? of sorts, specifically from Microsoft seems almost essential. Microsoft?s presence in the market, and with Windows Phone stepping towards the corporate market on its own time, could give RIM the boost of life-fluid that they need.

RIM wants to still be around and there?s nothing wrong with that. Obviously, like we said above, there are still options. Those options exist because people want RIM to succeed. But, while RIM wants to do this on their own, they might need a little help. But, the biggest thing is that RIM needs to be able to accept that help is essential, even if it?s not the ?do it yourself? option.

Unmet Needs of Breast Cancer Patients Relative to Survival Duration

Park BW et al. ? The present study demonstrated that long?term breast cancer survivors had a significantly lower level of unmet needs than patients with survival duration of less than 3 years after surgery and patients with survival duration of less than 1 year since surgery suffered the greatest unmet needs. Quality of life (QOL) might be enhanced if interventions are made for specific unmet needs of each patient group.

How Google Could Sort Out The Android Update Mess

  • DefaultHow Google Could Sort Out The Android Update Mess

Only one company can save Android users from years more of update hell ? Google.

There?s no doubt that when it comes to updates, the Android platform is in a mess. While this mess doesn?t seem to be throwing the brakes on activations, it does mean that existing Android users are being screwed out of the ability to run the latest version of Google?s mobile OS. The topic has really been brought to light with the release of Android 4.0. Since ICS is such a major advance in Android technology, all Android users want it for their device.
Why is the Android update situation such a fiasco? Opinions vary. Some believe that it?s all about the money, while others see it as a business model problem. Some tend to think that it?s a mixture of both issues. Money, of course, comes into the equation, but the business model factors of binding contracts and subsidized handsets compounds the problem. I personally believe that Android has grown at such a fast rate, that details like this weren't fully thought out.
    But who can solve this update problem? Only one company can save Android users from years more of update hell ? Google. So, how can Google fix this mess? Is it by tightly controlling the handset hardware like Microsoft and Apple currently does? Or is it by adopting virtualization, like some experts suggest? No, it?s far simpler than that. Google needs to market OS updatability as a key selling feature of its Nexus line of handsets. Furthermore, Google needs to guarantee that all Nexus handsets will be upgradable to the next major Android release. Doing this would accomplish two things;
#1 : It would give people who want an easy route to upgrading an easy choice when it came to choosing an Android handset.
#2 : This move would put pressure on other hardware manufacturers to follow suit.
To make this work Google would need to do several things:
    * Streamline the highly-complex update process, possibly by adopting virtualization
    * Publish a minimum hardware spec that handset makers must follow
    * Cut carriers out of the equation, or at least sideline them (like Apple has done with iOS), and possibly go as far as cutting the hardware makers out too (like Microsoft has done with Windows Phone)
    * Discourage handset makers from locking bootloaders, thus encouraging the dev community and homebrew projects
    * Discourage carrier branding and crapware (after all, all that bloatware isn?t helping make Android handsets any safer)
Some have have even suggested that paid updates would fix the problem, but I think that even though there are users who would gladly pay to have the most current software on their devices as soon as it was available, in general most Android users would reject the idea, and it would hurt Android in the long run. So, what do you guys think? What do you think Google could / should do to fix the problems with updates?

  • Junior Droid

    Default

I agree with what you're saying, but I would add that an "official" Google OS (and updates) would be stock Android only (the "With Google" tag). Work with OEMs (and even carriers) to release Google-only phones (Nexus, OG etc) but also (to keep the carriers happy) release the open source version of Android without any Google apps. That way the OEM and\or carrier can do whatever the hell they want to do with the OS, and they officially (and legally) take ownership of support and maintenance.

The "With Google" phones, on the other hand, would all be treated like Nexus phones. These phones would cross all carriers, devs would love them, the advanced user community would love them, and the "official" Android stats would belong in this category.

4 Products That Can Be Added To Apple's Pipeline In 2012 And Beyond

Apple (AAPL) has been a perfect example of innovation. Apple's iPhone changed the way we used to think about the cell phone market. Surely, we had several different models of cell phones, but none of them looked like the iPhone. After this radical innovation, Apple did not stop its search for better phones. Apple re-shaped the industry with new phone models based on the original concept: iPhone 3G, iPhone 3G S, iPhone 4G, iPhone 4S?The iPad concept was also a huge success. Apple sold near 9.25 million iPads in the last quarter.

I think this year we will see an updated iPhone 5 which will probably have a faster processor and a larger screen. We might also see an iPad 3, which is rumored to be thinner, lighter, and safer. I also expect that Apple's MacBook series will keep getting updated with upgraded specifications. However, I am expecting radical innovations from Apple for 2012 and beyond. Apple, with minimal competition, has the power of premium-pricing its innovative product lines. Therefore, I expect Apple to come up with products that can re-shape the industry. Namely, I expect the following 4 radical innovations from Apple for 2012 or beyond:

    #1 iTV

I am not talking about upgraded Apple TV which is already available in the market for $99. Surely, Apple TV is a great entertainment tool which allows us to stream movies and shows from both iTunes and Netflix (NFLX) over the internet. However, I am talking about a new television set that looks just like a mega-screen iMac computer. Even a large-size iMac will probably be extremely popular among Apple fans. The product will likely be pretty expensive. But, think about how Sony (SNE) used to price its products compared to other manufacturers. Apple has the power to create a new market with premium products. Customers also are willing to pay for this premium.

There are already rumors around iTV that it will be launched in 2012 with a premium price tag. Since 2010, there is a strong expectation on Apple to get into this business. Peter Yared from Venture Beat suggests an Apple-branded TV, "with a lighted Apple logo that comes in sizes ranging from 37? to 60?. It automatically connects to the Internet and streams all of your iTunes video and audio content."

Apple might better hurry to get into the market first since Google's (GOOG) acquisition of Motorola might be a move into this segment by the internet giant. Jean-Louis Gassee from the Monday Note expects, "a next-generation Google TV and, quite likely, a Samsung TV set with an integrated Google TV running Android apps and competing with the putative Apple TV." I know several friends who utilize their 27 inch iMacs as a TV player. So, I think an Apple TV is an ultra-high possibility in 2012.

    #2 iRadio

The name iRadio is already taken in the virtual world. But, what I have in my mind is more like something that is offered by SiriusXM (SIRI) satellite radio. So far, Apple has left this area to its software suppliers. The iTunes store offers thousands of podcast applications ranging from BBC Radio Live Player to Last.fm. The problem is the extreme variety and inconvenience in finding the radio station that best fits to your desired style. Apple can charge a nominal monthly fee to offer premium stations that users can listen wherever they travel around the world. (Note that, this iRadio can become a serious threat to SiriusXM in long-term)

Another way Apple can monetize iRadio will be getting involed in revenue sharing agreements with network providers. The additional data services provided by telecommunication companies can be charged to customers bills. Apple can retain a share of these additional charges, boosting, as well as, diversifying its revenue sources. Rumor already has it that Apple is working on its own Radio FM application for iPhone. Gene Munster from Piper Jaffray predicts that, "Apple will furnish a radio in late 2012 or early 2013". The analyst goes on claiming that people are willing to pay more than $1000 for an all-in-one package by Apple instead of putting the parts together. Probably iRadio will be embedded in an all-in-one entertainment center by Apple.

    #3 iKindle

Okay. Probably it will not be named as iKindle, but Apple is very likely to come up with its own 7-inch tablet in this year. Amazon's (AMZN) Kindle Fire has been one of the products most compared to Apple's iPad. Kindle, which is priced at $199, obviously has the price advantage. Apple's cheapest iPad 2 is selling for $499, which is more than double what Kindle users pay. If Amazon's Kindle becomes a highly profitable product, Amazon might come up with its own iPad. It is not a tug-of-war between Apple and Amazon yet, but things might get juicy between these companies in 2012.

If Apple does not hit Amazon first, Amazon might be the first mover into Apple's territory. Therefore, I expect Apple to show its superior pricing power, and hit the Amazon's Kindle with a revolutionary product of its own. There are already talks of a mini iPad model to compete with Amazon Kindle. A recent report from Digitimes claims that the supply chain for iKindle is already on the move. While their sources are not very clear, it is claimed that Apple is in the process of ordering 7.85 inch panels from LG Display and AU Optronics.

    # iDouble

I know this sounds too imaginary, and it probably is, but you will never know. You might be wondering what is iDouble. It sounds like a double burger from McDonald's (MCD). Right? Well, there is a similarity between iDouble and McDonald's double burger. Just as double-burger is among McDonald's most profitable products, iDouble could be a huge profit booster for Apple.

What I have in my mind is a dual-screen notebook or iPad from Apple. The product will have two active sides, each of which can be used as a screen. I would expect the screens to be flexible, so that they can be folded side-ways or used as such. A revolutionary product as such can easily be priced with a pretty high premium. Given Apple's net profit margin of 24%, the higher prices will result in significantly higher profits.

Toshiba has already revealed a dual-screen tablet PC in 2010, but it did not receive much publicity. But, again that was a Toshiba. If Apple does the same, I think fans will wait for days in front of the stores before the iDouble hits the shelves. There are already several websites that explain how to use the new AirPlay mirroring functionality. Thus, there is a huge interest in dual-screen functionalities. While I do not expect iDouble soon, I think the popularity of these mirroring applications might induce Apple executives to get involved in the dual-screen market niche.

    Disclosure: I am long AAPL.

Kim Jong Un dubbed "supreme leader" of military

    (AP)?

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? North Korea hailed Kim Jong Il's son as "supreme leader" of the 1.2-million strong military, ramping up its campaign to install the young man as the next leader of the communist nation even as millions continue mourning the father a week after his death.

Kim Jong Un made a third visit Saturday to the palace where his father's body is lying in state ? this time as "supreme leader of the revolutionary armed forces" and accompanied by North Korea's top military brass, according to the official Korean Central News Agency.

The new title and public show of support from the military leadership sent a strong signal that the nation will maintain Kim Jong Il's "military first" policy for the time being.

Earlier Saturday, the newspaper Rodong Sinmun, mouthpiece of the ruling Workers' Party, also recognized the young man's authority over the military by calling him "supreme commander" of the armed forces.

Kim Jong Un, who is in his late 20s and was unveiled in September 2010 as his father's choice as successor, will be the third-generation Kim to rule the nation of 24 million. His father and grandfather led the country under different titles, and it remains unclear which other titles will be bestowed on the grandson.

Kim Il Sung, who founded North Korea in 1948, retains the title of "eternal president" even after his death in 1994.

Kim family myths renew with a roar in N. Korea
Loss, fear, threats drive N. Korean mass grief
Pentagon sees smooth change so far in N. Korea

Son Kim Jong Il ruled as chairman of the National Defense Commission, supreme commander of the Korean People's Army and general secretary of the Workers' Party.

Kim Jong Un was promoted to four-star general and appointed a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party. He had been expected to assume a number of other key posts while being groomed to succeed his father.

His father's death comes at a sensitive time for North Korea, which was in the middle of negotiations with the U.S. on restarting talks to dismantle the North's nuclear weapons program in exchange for aid, and had been preparing for 2012 celebrations marking Kim Il Sung's 100th birthday. Suffering from a shortfall in basic staples after several harsh seasons, officials also had been asking for help feeding its people.

North Korea has emphasized the Kim family legacy during the sped-up succession movement for Kim Jong Un. State media invoked Kim Il Sung in declaring the people's support for the next leader, comparing the occasion to Kim Jong Il's ascension to "supreme commander" exactly 20 years ago Saturday.

At the Kumsusan Memorial Palace, Kim Jong Un and senior commanders paid silent tribute to the late leader, "praying for his immortality," KCNA said. The military also pledged its loyalty to Kim Jong Un, the report said.

"Let the whole army remain true to the leadership of Kim Jong Un over the army," KCNA reported ? a pledge reminiscent of those made when Kim Jong Il was named supreme commander.

The call to rally behind Kim Jong Un, dubbed the "Great Successor" in the wake of his father's death on Dec. 17 from a heart attack, comes amid displays of grief across North Korea. The country is to remain in an official state of mourning until after Kim's funeral Wednesday and a memorial Thursday.

In Pyongyang, mourners continued Saturday to bow and lay flowers at Kim's portrait at plazas and government buildings, including the Pyongyang Circus Theater and Kim Il Sung Square, even as temperatures dropped to 14 degrees below Celsius (7 degrees Fahrenheit).

At the April 25 People's Army House of Culture, workers at beverage kiosks handed steaming cups of water to shivering mourners, including children bundled up in colorful thick parkas. A sign urged mourners to thaw out inside a heated bus.

The order to provide food and warming huts for mourners came from Kim Jong Un, officials said.

Rick Santorum Does Pop-Up Video (The Atlantic Wire)

As the Republican primary heats up, that can only mean more ads. Which ones succeed? Which fail? We'll be reviewing them as they come out. Today, Rick Santorum makes a timely VH1 reference and Mitt Romney says happy totally normal Christmas.

Related: Attention Must Be Paid! (To Rick Santorum)

Related: GOP Tries Out New Ways to Criticize Obama's Foreign Policy

The Ad: Rick Santorum, "Pop Up"

Related: Obama Tied with Romney, Santorum in Pennsylvania

The Issues: Family life, the approval of Mike Huckabee and Sarah Palin, firm anti-choice stance

Related: First GOP Debate with Recognizable Candidates Will Be on June 13

The Message: See? Rick Santorum isn't the slightly creepy guy everyone seems to think he is! He's normal and coaches little league and likes to pass footballs... and legislation. Also he knows what television is, as evidenced by this timely Pop-Up Video reference.

Related: The Hot Or Not Primary

Who It's For: Someone, anyone, who might still consider voting for Rick Santorum.

What Everyone Else Sees: Wasn't Pop-Up Video like fifteen years ago? How many kids does he have? He's still running for this thing? Weird.

The Effect: This feels a bit like kicking a frothy mixture when it's down, but this is an embarrassing little ad. It doesn't say anything substantial and it appears bizarrely dated. D

The Ad: Mitt Romney, "Merry Christmas"

The Issues: Christmas, Religion, New Hampshire, the Troops

The Message: Hey New Hampshire, don't forget that Mitt Romney is running for a primary in your state, why look there he is right there. And in case you, or anyone really, was concerned about that Mormon stuff, have no fear, Mormons love Christmas just like you! So, Merry Christmas: It's a happy holiday but also a somber one as we Americanly shout out to the troops.

Who It's For: Values votes scared of Mormonism, Granite State dwellers, military families.

What Everyone Else Sees: Yeah, yeah, sure, just a normal Christmas for you Smithites, huh? When do the seeing stones come out? And the golden books? And all the other wives?? Also Iowans might be thinking: "Why isn't he here?"

The Effect:?A pretty basic video greeting, this does little but remind everyone of Mitt's Christianity (no Happy Holidays here) and that, y'know, he'd like you to vote for him in primaries. Blah. C.

The winner of 'The X Factor' is ...

    By Craig Berman, TODAY.com contributor

    Michael Becker / FOX

Melanie Amaro was crowned the first "X Factor" champ on Thursday night.

Melanie Amaro was crowned the winner of ?X Factor? on Thursday, surprising almost nobody and completing the journey that nearly ended before it began.

Amaro famously wasn?t one of judge Simon Cowell?s original four female finalists, but got called back into the competition when he either changed his mind or decided that the charade had gone on long enough, depending on how cynical you are. Once she got that second chance, she immediately became the favorite among the women, sailing through the competition and earning the $5 million recording contract.

She fell to her knees in prayer after hearing the news, overwhelmed enough to resist host Steve Jones? numerous attempts to get something resembling a sound bite out of her. She choked up several times during her show-closing number, but presumably will recover in time to record what everyone at Fox hopes?will be?a monster album that sells millions of downloads.

Josh Krajcik, the former burrito maker and champion of the 30-somethings, came in second, with Chris Rene having been eliminated earlier in the evening as the third-place finisher.

The result capped an evening that was more of a holiday special than a coronation. The three finalists all sang Christmas tunes, as did Justin Bieber in a duet with Stevie Wonder. Bieber than sang a few notes with Drew, the teenager eliminated earlier in the competition who auditioned with Bieber?s ?Baby? and seemed as overwhelmed by the opportunity as any girl her age would.

?She is a very special girl and she will go far,? Bieber said, though he did not indicate that he was prepared to fulfill Drew?s fantasy of a date with him at the beach.

The show also featured the snippets of interviews with friends and family members that tug at the heartstrings and are a staple of all reality competitions, or so it seems.

?We used to complain about you singing all the time, and now look at you singing in front of millions of people,? Amaro?s brothers said.

?I?m not really surprised we?re here right now. I want you to know that I love you so much, and I don?t think I say that enough,? said Krajcik?s daughter.

The night also saw the rivalry between Simon and judge?L.A. Reid depicted as a battle of heavyweights, while judges Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Adbul had the ?Cry-Off? clip show instead. This concept was brought to you by the 1950s, which wants its gender roles back.

Rachel Crow made her return, two weeks after her elimination in what was called the most shocking moment of the season. She didn?t seem to have any lingering scars from that experience.

?I?m gonna steal your job,? she told Steve.

It was a tough night for the host in general, who was often stymied in his attempts to talk with the contestants and had Nicole whiff on a punchline several times before he finally threw up his hands and gave up.

Other acts included 50 Cent, who tested the Fox censors and was accompanied by some of the less-heralded members of the Los Angeles Lakers, as well as Ne-Yo and Pitbull. Also singing was Leona Lewis, who won the British version of the show and is what the folks at Fox are desperately hoping that Amaro becomes. That, as much as anything else, will determine whether this becomes the next ?American Idol? or just one of the countless shows stuck in its wake.

    Did the right contestant win?

More accurate than Santa Claus: First Galileo satellite orbit determination with high precision

ScienceDaily (Dec. 23, 2011) ? Every year for Christmas, the North American Air Defence Command NORAD posts an animation on their website, in which the exact flight path of Santa Claus' sled led by reindeer Rudolf is precisely located (http://www.noradsanta.org/en/). The path of navigation satellites, however, has to be determined much more accurately than Santa's flight path, when precise ground positioning is required. GPS is the best known system of this kind, the European system Galileo is planned to be decidedly more accurate.

On 10 December, seven weeks after the start of the first two Galileo navigation satellites, scientists at the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences received the first signals from one of the two satellites (GSAT101). Four days later, the signals could be successfully recorded on a second frequency with a worldwide network of 18 ground stations of the European Space Agency (ESA).

By analysing these first observational data, the GFZ scientists were able to determine the orbit of the satellites, which are flying at an altitude of 23222 km, for the first time to a few decimetres.

Besides the calculations of the highly accurate atomic clocks on board, this is a significant factor for the overall performance of the system and the satellites. The independent examination of the satellite orbit parameters undertaken at the GFZ is used for the precise determination of the orbit. This is ultimately of great importance to the end user, e.g. motorists, since the orbit is the basis for the highly accurate location determination on the ground. Additionally, the possible linkage with the U.S. GPS would improve this positioning, because more satellites are available -- an advantage for example in densely developed cities.

The GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam acts in the context of the Galileo project as an external service for the Galileo Ground Mission Segment (GMS), both in the operation of four ESA receiver stations as well as the scientific analysis of the data obtained. The currently still low number of available ground stations requires a decidedly more careful validation, as it is the case for the hundreds of receiver stations for GPS observations. Especially in this area, the GFZ has many years of experience in satellite orbit determination.

By analysing observational data, the GFZ scientists were able to determine the orbit of the satellites, which are flying at an altitude of 23222 km, for the first time to a few decimetres.

Baby-Mother Bonds Affect Future Adult Relationships, Study Finds (LiveScience.com)

A mother lode of bonding ? or a lack thereof ? between moms and young children can predict kids' behavior in romantic relationships decades later, a new study suggests.

Adding to evidence that even preverbal memories are firmly imprinted on young psyches, researchers found that children who had been more securely attached to their mothers, now grown, did better at resolving relationship conflicts, recovering from those conflicts and enjoying stable, satisfying ties with their romantic partners in early adulthood.

"It's often very difficult to find the lingering effects of early life being related to adult behavior, because life circumstances change," said study author Jeffry A. Simpson, a professor of psychology at the University of Minnesota. "People change, but there's a kernel of stability from early experience in a lot of people."

Simpson and his colleagues reviewed data from 75 children born in 1976 and 1977 as part of the Minnesota Longitudinal Study of Risk and Adaptation, whose mothers received free prenatal care. These firstborn children were assessed at regular intervals with interviews, questionnaires, teachers' and parents' ratings and other observations, culminating with their relationships with their romantic partners at ages 20 and 21.

    Measuring the mother-child bond

When the children were 12 and 18 months old, they were videotaped in a stressful lab procedure called "Strange Situation," in which the children were separated and reunited with their mothers. Those who were deemed to have an insecure attachment with their mothers ? meaning they remained distressed throughout the experiment ? reported more negative emotions when trying to resolve major relationship conflicts with their romantic partners two decades later.

Simpson noted, however, that these results were affected by factors such as the children's social skills in elementary school (as rated by teachers) and the strength of their relationships with their best friend at age 16, which had also been monitored.

"We also found that if you were insecurely attached to your mother as a child, but had a really committed partner as an adult, that partner basically protected you from showing dysfunctional behavior in your relationship 20 years later," Simpson said. "It's not like you're destined to be insecure your entire life."

For example, those who had been insecurely attached as infants were more likely to still be with their partners two years later, at age 23, if their partners displayed better "conflict recovery" at 20 or 21, the study said.

The finding that certain relationship patterns can be overcome under the right circumstances, such as with a well-adjusted partner, also depends on the degree of trauma suffered by the child, and his or her overall resilience, said Dr. Victor Fornari, director of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for the North Shore-LIJ Health System in New Hyde Park, N.Y.

"It's not just the quality of caretaking and the child's innate temperament, as well as what his biological predispositions are," Fornari said. "Certainly all of this begins in early childhood, but it's not just the quality of the mother-infant relationship that determines the outcome."

    Can patterns be changed?

Adults who remember having a poor relationship with their mothers early in life ? whether or not that pattern continued, may want to speak with a therapist to maximize their chances of happy, successful romantic relationships, Simpson suggested.

"Often, identifying the sorts of patterns you may not be able to articulate, can (help) you find someone who is not going to reinforce the way you used to be treated, or the way you used to view the world," Simpson said.

But he added, "It's really important not to blame parents. Usually when there's a negative pattern of behavior with a mother and child, the mother is under financial or emotional stress . . . They're often doing the best they can given their life circumstances."

The study is published in the December issue of the journal Current Directions in Psychological Science.

Pass it on: An infant's bond with mom may affect his relationships later in life, though other factors also have influence.
