Lindsay Lohan shows off new (whiter) smile

whosay.com/lindsaylohan

By Courtney Hazlett

The people spoke and Lindsay Lohan listened! Lohan took her yellowed teeth to celeb-friendly cosmetic dentist Dr. Bill Dorfman, who whitened her smile.

"Thanks Dr. Dorfman for the zoom," Lohan tweeted, and posted a picture of her new look to her WhoSay page. "My gums are so sore though!"

Most recently, Lohan's dental upkeep hasn't ranked among her biggest problems; Lohan's probation was revoked during an Oct. 20 court appearance, and she's due back to stand before Judge Stephanie Sautner on Tuesday.

POLL: What Was the Worst Celebrity Marriage Ever?

Kim Kardashian filed for divorce from Kris Humpries after just 72 days of marriage. Perhaps her fairy tale wedding was not what it was meant to be after all.

Or maybe it was, given who we're talking about. She made millions off her big day and E! can start looking for her next future ex-husband in the near future.

They're far from the only stars to tie the knot only to bail almost immediately, however. Where do Kim and Kris rank among the worst celebrity marriages?

Kris Humphries Kardashian

In the last decade, stars like Jennifer Lopez, Eddie Murphy and Pamela Anderson (twice!) have seen unions dissolve within the same year of their nuptials.

Heck, Britney Spears tied the knot to Jason Alexander in Vegas and had it annulled 55 hours later. Time enough for him to get it in, and that's about it.

One of the shortest in recent times came when Chris Kattan wed Sunshine Tutt on June 28, 2008 ... and divorced her August 10. Terrible marriage, awesome name.

Even more recently, Tara Reid and Zack Kehayov tied the knot in August of 2011, but now she's saying it was bogus and never even legal. Weaksauce.

Which union was the worst of them all? Vote below!

Admittedly we kept the list very recent and defined "worst" by shortest. To submit your own as an honorable mention, hit the comments section below!

(AP) ? Looking for a big-name speaker?

Now may be the time to send President Barack Obama an invitation, especially if your group represents a key political constituency.

Obama has been making the rounds of Washington's awards dinners and black-tie galas this fall, donning a tuxedo or dark suit and heading to ballrooms across the nation's capital to speak to organizations representing blacks, Hispanics, Jews, women and gays. This weekend, he adds Italian- Americans to that list.

With the 2012 campaign picking up steam and Obama struggling to recapture the enthusiasm of 2008, the president's role as headline speaker has plenty of political undertones. He needs the well-connected, politically active leaders of these groups to help him motivate their members, raise money for his re-election and get people to show up to vote in next year's election.

And the president's remarks give him a chance to address specific criticism from some supporters, and tout lesser-known administration actions that target their needs.

Since September, Obama has been the featured speaker at dinners for the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, a forum on American Latino Heritage, and the annual gala for the Human Rights Campaign, a leading gay rights group. The president will speak Saturday at a black-tie dinner for the National Italian American Foundation, and in early November, at an awards dinner for the National Women's Law Center. The liberal Union for Reform Judaism says Obama will speak at its four-day conference in December.

Obama is following the path of many of his predecessors, who have also tried to curry favor with influential Washington-based organizations, particularly those with similar political leanings.

The president has also sent out his own invitations, bringing influential constituencies to the White House for Tribal Nations conferences, for Passover Seders, for Iftars.

With a presidential election just about a year away, the outreach to key voting blocs is more critical than ever. The president's approval ratings have dipped into the mid to low forties amid persistently high unemployment. And with sagging enthusiasm among some core supporters, Obama's campaign could face challenges in getting the first-time voters who helped him win the White House, particularly blacks, Hispanics and young people, back to the polls next November.

White House officials won't say exactly how aides decide which events the president attends. But it's little surprise that Obama rarely finds himself in front of anything less than a supportive audience.

The president often shows up just before he's scheduled to speak, and rarely stays for dinner. His speeches, sometimes delivered before a crowd of thousands, pull from his day-to-day messages on the economy and jobs, but are typically tailored to his audience.

During a fiery speech last month at the annual gala for the Human Rights Campaign, Obama heralded his role in ending the military's ban on openly gay service members and his administration's decision to stop enforcing the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as between one man and one woman. He also used the opportunity to jab Republican presidential candidates for failing to stand up for a gay service member who was booed by an audience at a GOP debate.

"You want to be commander in chief? You can start by standing up for the men and women who wear the uniform of the United States, even when it's not politically convenient," Obama said.

Rich Galen, a Republican strategist, said Obama would be better served spending more time working with Congress to bring down the nation's 9.1 percent unemployment rate than in trying to boost his political base.

"Doing all of these things is doing nothing to foster any meaningful legislation," he said.

White House officials insist the economy, not politics is the president's primary focus. Trying to show action on the economy in any way possible, they've launched a new campaign dubbed "We Can't Wait" to highlight action the president is taking without waiting for Congress.

The White House announced two minor actions Friday, with Obama directing government agencies to shorten the time it takes for federal research to turn into commercial products in the marketplace, and calling for creation of a centralized online site for companies to easily find information on federal services

At a Congressional Hispanic Caucus dinner in September, the president touted the impact the jobs bill he had recently proposed would have for Hispanic workers. But he also took on criticism of his administration's lack of progress on immigration, saying it couldn't all fall on his shoulders.

"We live in a democracy, and at the end of the day, I can't do this all by myself under our democratic system," he said.

The president took a similar approach later that month at the Congressional Black Caucus. Aware of rumblings from some members of the group that he hadn't done enough to address unemployment among African-Americans, Obama told blacks to quit crying and complaining and "put on your marching shoes" to follow him into battle for jobs and opportunity.

The president's comments left some at the event a bit unsettled, including Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., who said she found the president's language "a bit curious."

Democratic strategist Karen Finney said it's just as important for Obama to trumpet his accomplishments when he meets with supporters as it is to acknowledge the areas where there is frustration.

"I think it takes a certain amount of courage to do that," she said. "He gets a lot of respect for showing up."

Liberia election chief resigns ahead of November 8 vote (Reuters)

MONROVIA (Reuters) ? The head of Liberia's election commission, who has been accused of bias by incumbent President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf's challenger, has resigned, days ahead of a planned presidential run-off vote.

"I chose to step down for the sake of Liberia and so that (challenger Winston Tubman's) CDC (party) would not have an excuse not to participate in the run-off," NEC Chairman James Fromayan told Reuters Sunday.

Tubman last week threatened to withdraw from the November 8 run-off, the country's second post-war vote, unless there was a change of leadership at the election commission. Fromayan has denied any wrong-doing.

Last act of Thai flood drama not yet written

Thailand's worst flooding in half a century has inundated a third of the country.? ??NBC's Ian Williams reports.

By Ian Williams, NBC News correspondent

Bangkok on Thursday?is rather like a slow motion disaster movie. But the bickering cast can't quite agree on how its going to end. They keep putting up the end titles, only to follow with another, grimmer, scene.

?There's no continuity. If I were in a cinema, I'd walk right out.

?In just a few days, the authorities have shifted from incredible complacency to near hysteria. A week ago, Bangkok was going to be spared. Crisis over. Now we are told that the flood waters are unstoppable, that a massive wall of water is bearing down on us, and all the city is facing inundation.

The message from the government Thursday was, in effect, brace yourself or get out of town. They've declared a five day holiday to help people cope.

?It hasn't helped that the city and national governments are from rival political camps, and at times have seemed more intent on tripping each other up than facing up to the floods.

?Many people who can have left town, but it has been surprisingly orderly given the latest warnings. There has been panic buying, clearing the shelves of basic items like bottled drinking water, but for the most part the people of Bangkok remain remarkably calm. Worried, yes, but there's certainly no panic.

Ian Williams

Evacuating from Sai Mai district, North Bangkok, on Thursday

?

Even evacuations, one of which we witnesses today in the northern suburb of Sai Mai, have been largely good humored.
One reason, perhaps, is that few Thais trust their politicians, and many simply are not yet convinced the flood will reach them. In Sai Mai today, many residents were resisting calls to evacuate. I spoke to one family of nine, still living in a house swamped by three feet of water.

?"We don't want to leave our possessions," one of the women told me. "It will have to get much worse before we leave."

?Those who leave are staying with friends or in a growing string of evacuation centers.

Ian Williams

Reinforcing the flood defenses while geese watch Thursday at Sai Mai.

As of Thursday, most of central Bangkok remains dry, though sandbags are everywhere. It's very quiet.

?This low-lying city is no stranger to flooding. My road is regularly swamped in the rainy season after a heavy downpour. Flash flooding is a fact of life, but Thailand has seen nothing like this for half a century.

?A Thai friend of mine this morning shrugged when I asked him about his preparations. He's regularly been flooded -- and in traditional Thai houses that's kind of what the ground floor is for. Nobody in their right mind would keep anything valuable down there.

Ian Williams

The bloated Chao Phraya river on Thursday.

?

What worried him most was how long the water stays. Flash flooding drains away quite quickly, but the government's warning that the water descending on Bangkok could stick around for weeks.

?Which brings me back to that disaster movie analogy. The floods started in July and have submerged a good chunk of central Thailand (a flood plain that's been heavily and mindlessly developed in recent years - but that's another story), and killed more than 370 people at the last count.

?The water seeps, it doesn't surge. It been moving slowly but relentlessly, and is now picking off Bangkok suburb by suburb.

?The alarm for the next three days has been triggered by a combination of massive run-off from the central plains and high tides in the Gulf of Thailand and the Chao Praya, the bloated river of kings that runs through this city. Today in Chinatown, a particularly vulnerable part of the city, close to the Royal Palace, water was lapping right at the top to the sand-bag barrier now holding it back. It has already been breached in some places.

Six in the evening local time Saturday will see a record tide, we are being warned? -- D-day for Bangkok. Or maybe not. Hold those end titles.

Fundamentalist Christians protest at Paris theater (AP)

PARIS ? The city of Paris is filing legal complaints against a group of fundamentalist Christians who have been protesting a play currently showing at the municipal theater, claiming it is blasphemous, the mayor said Friday.

Riot police have been called in to chase off demonstrators bearing crosses loudly protesting in front of, and sometimes inside, the Theatre de la Ville since the Oct. 20 opening of the play.

"Sur le Concept du Visage du fils de Dieu" ("On the Concept of the Son of God's Face"), by Italian Romeo Castellucci is a provocative story centering on a young man caring for his aged and incontinent father. A portrait of the face of Christ looms large onstage throughout and projectiles are ultimately thrown at it.

Each night, police have had to defend the theater from a group of ultra-Christian protesters ? organized by the group Renouveau France ? who turn up with crucifixes and banners denouncing "Christianophobia," determined to disrupt the show .

Mayor Bertrand Delanoe said in a statement that Paris can't tolerate "such expressions of fundamentalism and intolerance."

His statement said the city is filing complaints when demonstrators try to interrupt performances.

The play has been shown elsewhere without incident, including in Poland, Italy and Spain ? traditionally Catholic countries.

Commentators backing the play contend it is not intended to offend Christ.

The director of the theater, in the center of Paris, Emmanuel Demarcy-Moto, denounced the "odious threats" and vowed that the show must go on.

YouTube launches broad entertainment venture (AP)

NEW YORK ? YouTube is making a bold step into original programming in an entertainment venture with some 100 content creators, from Madonna to The Wall Street Journal.

The Google Inc.-owned video site said Friday that it's launching more than 100 new video channels. The partners include an array of Hollywood production companies, celebrities and new media groups that will produce mainly niche-oriented videos.

YouTube is shelling out $100 million to producers, according to people familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The money is an advance on advertising money the videos will bring in, and Google will recoup its portion first before splitting the proceeds. Advances are as high as $5 million per channel, said another person familiar with the arrangement, also speaking on condition of anonymity.

Neither person was authorized to comment publicly on the matter.

Google declined to offer financial details of the deals, but said the majority of revenue will go to partners.

Participants include Madonna, former NBA star Shaquille O'Neal, comedian Amy Poehler, actor Ashton Kutcher, "Office" star Rainn Wilson, spiritual doctor Deepak Chopra and "Modern Family" actress Sofia Vergara. Most are creating channels through their production companies. Madonna is a partner with the dance channel DanceOn, while O'Neal plans the Comedy Shaq Network.

Lionsgate is presenting a fitness channel, and other channels will be launched by news satire the Onion, professional wrestling's WWE, online magazine Slate and news service Thomson Reuters.

The channels will roll out beginning this month, though most will premiere next year. YouTube says the channels will add 25 hours of new original content daily, with dozens of Web series debuting at scheduled times.

Ultimately, YouTube is aiming to create a new digital video platform that will rival television programming.

In a blog posting Friday night, YouTube said the channels are being developed "specifically for the digital age." The video site compared the expanded video offerings to the advent of cable television.

YouTube has tried to build a more advertiser-friendly product of professional-quality video, as opposed to simply user-created videos. Advertisers generally prefer to have their ads matched with known quantities. YouTube has also previously tried to urge viewers to stay longer with TV-like services like the YouTube Leanback, which continuously plays a personalized selection of videos.

Google is also looking to add professionally produced content to its huge roster of user-generated videos, to give users of its Google TV platform something to watch.

Major Hollywood networks such as News Corp.'s Fox and The Walt Disney Co.'s ABC have blocked their content from being shown on Google TV because the sides have been unable to come to a licensing deal that the networks believes pays them fairly. Networks also don't want to jeopardize their lucrative relationship with pay TV distributors like Comcast Corp. and DirecTV.

Google is a platform that has been adopted by set-top box maker Logitech, which makes a device called a Logitech Revue that sells for $100.

GPS shoes can track Alzheimer's patients

These boots were really made for walking.

The first batch of 3,000 shoes with integrated GPS devices ? to help track down dementia-suffering seniors who wander off and get lost ? just shipped from manufacturer GTX Corp. to the footwear firm Aetrex, two years after plans were announced to develop the product.

The company's first shoes ? dreamed up in 2002 following the Elizabeth Smart case ? were intended to locate missing children. And safety is the driving force today behind the company's newest GPS-enabled shoe. According to AFP, the shoes will sell for about $300 a pair and buyers will be able to set up a monitoring service to locate "wandering" seniors suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

The system is implanted in the heel of an otherwise normal shoe, and lets caregivers or family members monitor the wearer and even set up alerts if a person strays outside of a predefined area.

The shoes were certified by the Federal Communications Commission this year. GTX believes the market has great potential, given the soaring costs of Alzheimer's.

"This is a significant milestone for both companies and while the $604 billion worldwide cost of dementia has become and will continue to be a significant fiscal challenge, the under-$300 GPS-enabled shoes will ease the enormous physical and emotional burden borne by Alzheimer's victims, caregivers and their geographically distant family members," said Patrick Bertagna, chief executive of GTX Corp.

Health professionals say the new GPS shoes could be a real boon for the more than 5 million Americans who suffer from the disease, according to AFP. Andrew Carle, a professor at George Mason University's College of Health and Human Services, said the shoes may even save lives.

"It's especially important for people in the earliest stages of Alzheimer's who are at the highest risk," Carle told AFP.

"They might be living in their home but they're confused. They go for a walk and they can get lost for days."

But well before GTX untied its newest product, another manufacturer strode into the picture with a decidedly different demographic ? prostitutes.

"Our first shoe, a demo version of the Platform 001 sandal, was inspired by the prostitutes of ancient Greece and Rome, who enticed clients with their flutes and sandals that left 'follow me' footprints in the earth," explains the website for The Aphrodite Project.

"Our contemporary sandals combine these poetic images from antiquity with promotional and safety features designed to meet the needs of today?s sex workers."

The Aphrodite Project's sandals are designed to protect with a piercing siren to scare off threatening muggers or attackers and a GPS-powered system that can send warnings to police.

Economy grew 2.5 pct. in Q3 as consumers rebound (AP)

WASHINGTON ? A summer of modest economic growth is helping dispel lingering fears that another recession might be near. Whether the strength can be sustained, though, is far from clear.

Buoyed by a resurgent consumer and strong business investment, the economy expanded at an annual rate of 2.5 percent in the July-September quarter, the government said Thursday.

The expansion, the strongest quarterly growth in a year, came as a relief after anemic growth in the first half of the year and weeks of wild stock market shifts.

The economy must grow at nearly double the third-quarter pace to lower high unemployment, which has been near 9 percent for the more than two years since the recession officially ended.

And though consumer spending was triple the level of the second quarter, Americans earned less, on an inflation-adjusted basis, in the July-September period. That meant that many people financed their spending binges by cutting back on savings. Few economists think that can continue.

Economists believe that growth in consumer spending, which accounts for about 70 percent of economic activity, will be restrained until incomes start growing at healthier levels. That is unlikely until hiring picks up.

Paul Ashworth, chief U.S. economist for Capital Economics, predicts that growth will cool off in the fourth quarter and next year.

Nonetheless, the report on U.S. gross domestic product, or GDP, sketched a more optimistic picture for an economy that only two months ago seemed destined for another recession.

And it was delivered on the same day that European leaders announced a deal in which banks would take 50 percent losses on Greek debt and raise new capital to protect against defaults on sovereign debt.

Stocks surged on the European deal and maintained their gains after the report on U.S. growth was released.

"This has been a morning of encouraging news," said Jennifer Lee, a senior economist for BMO Capital Markets. "The fourth quarter may see some pullback in U.S. economic growth ... but the positive details underlying the GDP report should help ease fears of a U.S. recession..somewhat."

Consumers helped drive much of the growth. They spent at an annual rate of 2.4 percent. Many bought more furniture and clothing.

And spending on services rose 3 percent, the most in more than five years. Much of the gain was due to consumers paying more for health care and to cool their homes during an unseasonably hot summer.

Still, after-tax incomes adjusted for inflation fell at a rate of 1.7 percent in the summer. It was the biggest decline since the third quarter of 2009 ? just as the recession was ending.

Businesses also helped boost third-quarter growth by stepping up their investment in equipment and software. That category surged 17.4 percent ? nearly three times the rate from spring. They also invested more in building, a sign that some businesses could be expanding despite the sluggish economy.

The GDP report measures the country's total output of goods and services. It covers everything from bicycles to battleships, as well as services such as haircuts and doctor's visits.

In August, many feared the economy was destined for another recession after the government said growth fell to less than 1 percent for the first six months of the year.

High gas prices, the growing debt crisis in Europe and wild fluctuations in the stock market also contributed to those fears, which have receded in recent weeks after reports showed improvements in hiring and consumer spending.

Economists project an annual growth rate of 2.5 percent to 3 percent for the October-December quarter and for all of next year ? just enough to keep the unemployment rate from rising.

For the 14 million people who are out of work and want jobs, that's discouraging news. And it's an ominous sign for President Barack Obama, who will be facing voters next fall.

There have been some encouraging signs.

A measure of business investment plans rose in September for the second straight month and by the most in six months, according to a government report Wednesday on orders for longer-lasting manufactured goods.

And consumers stepped up their spending on retail goods in both July and September. The main reason for the September gain was more people bought new cars, a purchase people typically make when they are confident in their finances.

Economists warned that even their modest assessment of growth of around 2.7 percent for next year will fall short if the European debt crisis isn't resolved. And the outlook could dim further if U.S. lawmakers allow a Social Security tax cut and extended unemployment benefits to expire at the end of this year.

Windows XP turns 10, still thrives

By Suzanne Choney

Ten years ago today, Oct. 25, Microsoft released Windows XP, which became one of its most popular flavors of the Windows operating system?? largely because what came after it, Windows Vista, was so terrible.

And while many of us will be looking to migrate from Windows 7 to Windows 8 when it becomes available?? no date is set, but it could be late next summer?? there are still plenty of folks using XP. (And you probably know this, but Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal.)

In StatCounter's chart, above, in the United States, XP still ranks as the top operating system, followed by Windows 7 and?? gulp?? Windows Vista. Vista was security-laden to the point of sluggishness and resulted in lots of user frustration. Microsoft remains so sensitive about the slowness issue from Vista's days that it has made a big point of saying that Windows 8 will boot super fast.

Microsoft is still providing "extended" (that means: you pay) tech support for XP patches and security updates through April 2014.

Globally, XP's reach is even larger than in the U.S.:

"Happy Tenth Birthday, Windows XP. Now Please Die," is the headline Tuesday from NetworkWorld, which says that the operating system's "longevity has allowed XP to take root and outlast its welcome. Consumers have been quicker to ditch XP for Windows 7 while businesses hem and haw and slowly test a decade's-worth of custom apps on Windows 7. The current economic situation isn't helping one iota as budgets are constrained from Wall St. to Main St."

And while budgets are a big factor, so is comfort level. Many who have stayed with XP just find it like a well-worn slipper, not ready to be thrown out and too comfy to give up. If you're a Windows user, which version do you have? Take our poll above.

Get More Control Over Finder's Copy Dialog with the Option Key [Mac Tip]

Get More Control Over Finder's Copy Dialog with the Option KeyWhen you copy multiple files in OS X and the destination folder already has files of the same name, you don't have a lot of choice over what to do?you can either cancel the copy, or replace the files. This little trick gives you a bit more power.

It may not be as easy as Windows 8's new copy dialog, but OS X actually has a few hidden options if, say, you want to keep some of the old files and replace other ones. Web site Mac OS X Hints explains:

In Lion, one of the new features is to be able to 'Keep Both Files' when copying multiple files in Finder. While this is useful there are many times when the old 'Skip' behavior is better suited to the task. Well, the (now) obvious way to do this is to just hold the 'Option' key, and then 'Keep Both File' changes to 'Skip.'

The "press Option for more options" rule has been around for awhile on OS X, but this particular tweak is Lion-only. It's tricks like these that make new versions of an OS great, even if the big features aren't all that spectacular.

Tension boils over in the ballroom on 'Dancing' (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? The latest episode of "Dancing With the Stars" included insults, an animal comparison and two nearly perfect performances.

A heated exchange between professional dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy and head judge Len Goodman stole the spotlight from first-place finishers Ricki Lake and J.R. Martinez.

Chmerkovskiy and his partner, soccer star Hope Solo, landed near the bottom of the judges' leaderboard Monday. With 20 points out of 30, they finished just ahead of Chaz Bono, in last place with 19 points.

One of the seven remaining celebrities will be dismissed during Tuesday's episode. Judges' scores combined with viewer votes determine who is kicked off the hit ABC show each week.

When Goodman called Solo's rumba "your worst dance of the whole season," Chmerkovskiy suggested the judge get out of the dance business.

Chmerkovskiy told one of the show's hosts that the judges seem to pick on certain contestants, and he kept up the conversation after Monday's live episode.

"The judges have their favorites," he said. "They always have."

Bono's professional partner, Lacey Schwimmer, agreed.

"They always have their favorites, and this season it's completely clear who they are. I won't name names, but we are not one of them," she said. "I'm actually proud of what Maks said. A lot of us don't get the chance to stand up for us and our partners."

Schwimmer cried backstage during Monday's episode and was still upset after the show, when she complained about the judges' "rude" remarks about Bono.

"Every week he gets referred to as an animal," she said. "They always comment on his personality, and last I checked, this was a dancing show."

After the couple danced their tango, judge Bruno Tonioli said Bono was like "a cute little penguin trying to be a big menacing bird of prey." Tonioli has also compared Bono to an Ewok.

Mom Cher tweeted her support before and after Bono's performance.

Bono said after the show that he "came on here to show people a strong proud transgender man, and I'm not going to let the judges get me down."

David Arquette, who finished in third place with his "Grease"-themed routine, said tensions are running high as the competition heats up.

"It's just a high-pressure part of the season," he said after Monday's episode. "Everybody's really passionate about it, so it's not a surprise people get fired up."

He earned 23 points for a quickstep that "had the exuberance and charge of a frisky teenager on spring break," Tonioli said.

Nancy Grace came in second with her best score yet: 24 points for a foxtrot that one judge called "a show-stopper."

Lake and Martinez tied with the top score of 29 points.

Rob Kardashian ? who had sisters Kim and Khloe and their basketball husbands among his cheering section ? finished in fourth place with 22 points for a cha-cha Tonioli described as "adequate, but it didn't have the impact and power it should at this stage."

The seven couples also danced a group routine to a medley of Broadway songs. Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth performed a medley of her own, singing a pair of show tunes.

Chenoweth is set to return on Tuesday's episode, when a sixth celebrity is ousted. Carson Kressley, Chynna Phillips, Kristin Cavallari, Elisabetta Canalis and Ron Artest/Metta World Peace have already been eliminated this season.

Pope expresses shame for Christian violence in history (Reuters)

ASSISI, Italy (Reuters) ? Pope Benedict, leading a global inter-religious meeting, acknowledged on Thursday "with great shame" that Christianity had used force in its long history but said violence in God's name had no place in the world today.

Benedict spoke as he hosted some 300 religious leaders from around the world - including Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Zoroastrians, Taoists, Shintoists and Buddhists - in an inter-faith prayer gathering for peace in the city of St Francis.

"As a Christian I want to say at this point: yes, it is true, in the course of history, force has also been used in the name of the Christian faith," he said in his address to the delegations in an Assisi basilica.

"We acknowledge it with great shame. But it is utterly clear that this was an abuse of the Christian faith, one that evidently contradicts its true nature," he said.

It was one of the few times that a pope has apologized for events such as the Crusades or the use of force to spread the faith in the New World. The late Pope John Paul apologized in 2000 for Christianity's historical failures.

Benedict, who in his address condemned terrorism, said history had also shown that the denial of God could bring about "a degree of violence that knows no bounds." He said the concentration camps of World War Two revealed "with utter clarity the consequences of God's absence."

The Assisi gathering, held on the 25th anniversary of a historic initiative in favor of peace hosted by John Paul in 1986, this time did not include common prayer among the delegates.

"ALL RELIGIONS NOT EQUAL"

The difference reflected Benedict's more conservative view of Catholic relations with other religions. In fact, Benedict, who did not attend the 1986 meeting when he was a cardinal, later implicitly criticized it because it implied that all religions were somehow equal.

The 1986 meeting, which took place at a time of the Cold War and conflicts in Lebanon, Northern Ireland and Central America, was billed as a "meeting of prayer for peace."

Thursday's anniversary gathering in Assisi, birthplace of St Francis, one of the world's most universally recognized symbols of peace, was called a "pilgrimage" for truth and peace.

In fact, instead of praying in each other's presence, as they did in 1986, the delegates were withdrawing to various rooms around the Basilica of St Mary of the Angels in the lower part of Assisi for what the program called "silence, reflection and personal prayer."

In his morning address, the Muslim delegate, Kyai Haji Hasyim Muzadi, general secretary of the International Conference of Islamic Scholars, said:

"Reality demonstrates that many human problems on this planet in fact originate from people with religions."

A representative of African traditional religions appeared to chide the big churches.

"The time has come for the leaders of all the world's religions to have a new frame of mind in which indigenous religions are given the same respect and consideration as other religions," he said.

Thursday's gathering included four people billed as "non-believers" -- agnostics the pope said had been invited to represent people in the world who have no faith but are "on the lookout for truth, searching for God."

He said such non-believers should not be confused with militant atheists, who, he said, live in the "false certainty" that there is no God.

In the afternoon, the delegates were moving to the upper part of Assisi for another round of speeches and to pay homage at the tomb of St Francis.

Cavaliers Host Gala For Pediatric Cancer Research ? CBS Cleveland

(Photo by David Liam Kyle/NBAE via Getty Images)

(Photo by David Liam Kyle/NBAE via Getty Images)

CLEVELAND (AP) ? While they wait for the NBA lockout to end, the Cleveland Cavaliers are putting their time off to good use.

With the season on hold because of the labor impasse, the Cavs turned their court over to help kids fighting cancer.

On Tuesday night, the team hosted a fashion runway show at Quicken Loans Arena for ?Flashes of Hope,? a national nonprofit organization that raises money for pediatric cancer research and provides free photography portfolios to children fighting the disease. Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, coach Byron Scott and his staff greeted more than 1,000 guests on the red carpet prior to the event.

Members of the Cleveland Browns, including wide receiver Josh Cribbs, cornerback Joe Haden and backup quarterback Seneca Wallace were among the VIPs who walked the runway with children afflicted with cancer. Haden worked the crowd like a seasoned supermodel, slapping hands with guests and strutting to the amusement of safety Mike Adams and several other teammates sitting at a front-row table.

Last year?s event raised over $350,000, and Allison Clarke, who began the program when her son, Quinn, was diagnosed with cancer as a 20-month-old, said ?Flashes of Hope,? which now has chapters in 55 cities, has raised more than $500,000 in the past two years for research.

?It started 10 years ago when after my son got cancer for the first time, and one of his friends at the hospital passed away,? Clarke said. ?I wondered if his mom had a photograph of him.?

Clarke said three weeks later the first photo shoot took place, and the program has since expanded to 55 cities nationwide. Her son, who was diagnosed with a rare tumor when he was nine, is now 12, and ?doing well.?

?We go to the hospitals with amazing commercial photographers and stylists and they do these shoots that are like birthday parties for the kids, and then they give the families these wonderful packages.? she said.

Clarke credited the Cavs with making the program a huge success

?Once they got involved, it took it from zero to 100 pretty quickly,? she said.

Gilbert, a father of five, walked down the runway with his wife, Jennifer. A few moments earlier, their son Nick, who was born with Neurofibromatosis (NF), a nerve disorder that causes tumors to grow anywhere in the body, walked the runway.

AP: Man to surrender in NY insider trading case

(AP) ? A prominent former Goldman Sachs board member was expected to surrender to federal authorities on Wednesday to face criminal charges stemming from a massive hedge fund insider trading case, according to two people familiar with the case.

Rajat Gupta was expected to appear in federal court in Manhattan.

The two people, who have inside knowledge of the case, confirmed Tuesday night that Gupta intended to surrender but declined to say what the charges are. They spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the charges hadn't been formally announced.

The Securities and Exchange Commissioner originally brought civil fraud charges against Gupta in March. The SEC alleged that, at the height of the financial crisis, he passed along privileged financial information that helped enrich Raj Rajaratnam, a former billionaire hedge fund manager who was the prime target of the criminal probe.

Gupta's lawyer responded by accusing the SEC of launching a "flawed case premised in large part on unreliable evidence being used in an attempt to bring down a man of sterling reputation and remarkable achievements without the procedural safeguards historically accorded to all persons similarly charged."

The Indian-born, Harvard-educated Gupta also has served on the boards of Procter & Gamble and the parent company for American Airlines. He was a guest at President Barack Obama's first state dinner.

Gupta's name played prominently at the criminal trial earlier this year of Rajaratnam, who was convicted after prosecutors used a trove of wiretaps on which he could be heard coaxing a crew of corporate tipsters into giving him an illegal edge on blockbuster trades.

Jurors heard testimony that at an Oct. 23, 2008, Goldman board meeting, members were told that the investment bank was facing a quarterly loss for the first time since it had gone public in 1999.

Prosecutors produced phone records showing Gupta called Rajaratnam 23 seconds after the meeting ended, causing Rajaratnam to sell his entire position in Goldman the next morning and save millions of dollars.

Rajaratnam also earned close to $1 million when Gupta told him that Goldman had received an offer from Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway to invest $5 billion in the banking giant, prosecutors said.

In one tape played at trial, Rajaratnam could be heard grilling Gupta about whether the Goldman Sachs board had discussed acquiring a commercial bank or an insurance company.

"Have you heard anything along that line?" Rajaratnam asked Gupta.

"Yeah," Gupta responded. "This was a big discussion at the board meeting."

Prosecutors sought to maximize the impact of the Gupta tape by calling Goldman Sachs chairman Lloyd Blankfein to testify that the phone call violated the investment bank's confidentiality policies.

Gupta's lawyer Gary P. Naftalis said Tuesday night that his client and Rajaratnam communicated for "legitimate reasons." He said his client didn't trade in any securities, didn't tip Rajaratnam so he could trade and didn't share in any profits.

"The facts demonstrate that Mr. Gupta is an innocent man and that he has always acted with honesty and integrity," Naftalis said in an emailed statement.

Rajaratnam, who's in his mid-50s, was sentenced earlier this year to 11 years in prison. His lawyers had argued for 6 1/2 to nine years. Defense attorney Terence Lynam asked the judge to show compassion because of Rajaratnam's illnesses, saying: "He does not deserve to die in prison."

The FBI's New York office and the U.S. attorney's office in Manhattan declined to comment about Gupta on Tuesday.

Neverending partner search

Hello there! I?ve been a member for over three years, and have good experience with role-playing. Many of my current partners have disappeared, so I am now looking for a role-playing partner or two. Even if someone has replied to this thread, please contact me. I will likely take on two or more partners.

1 If you often use profanity, you can use it, just not every other sentence or so.
2. The basic rating is going to be around PG-13 for many scenes with a lot of action. I am willing to go higher, as long as it doesn't take away from the actual plot.
3. I play both genders, though I have stronger female characters. I am willing to play males, and have some I am willing to try. Please keep in mind that I will play a male if both of us double.
4. Also, I am looking for literate to advanced literate players, and definitely no one-liners. My general post length is three to six paragraphs, depending on what you give me to work with. In addition, if at any time you are unsatisfied with the role-play, please let me know and don?t abandon the role-play instead.
5. Please let me know if you are not interested anymore, I would much rather you let me know. I will respond everyday, if you can not be online for a few days, give me a heads up.

I am generally interested in anything fantasy related, especially Medieval Fantasy. However, I'm not really a fan of realistic role plays, and likely will not do a high school role-play. Also, I enjoy creating my own characters, so don't have many fandoms I would be willing to do. I might consider creating characters in a world from a book or movie, however.

I have several plots floating around in my head, and I am more than willing to share them with you and hopefully come up with something grand. Please feel free to come up with your own plots as well, and if we both like it I can provide some input and we can begin. I prefer role-plays to take place on the PM system or boards, as they are most easiest to keep track of. Send me a PM or post here if you are at all interested, and have a wonderful day!

98 Degrees singer among Occupy Cincinnati arrests (AP)

CINCINNATI ? Former boy band singer Justin Jeffre (JEHF'-ree) has pleaded not guilty to trespassing after being arrested in the Occupy Cincinnati protest.

Police say the member of 98 Degrees was one of 11 people arrested early Sunday at the city's Fountain Square after the 3 a.m. closing time. They also were charged with unlawful use of the square.

Jeffre tells The Cincinnati Enquirer ( http://cin.ci/os723g) he spent several hours in jail and it was "no fun." But he says it was the right place to be to stand up for free speech.

Attorney Jennifer Kinsley entered a not guilty plea for him Monday.

The now 38-year-old Jeffre is a founding member of 98 Degrees with Nick and Drew Lachey (luh-SHAY') and Jeff Timmons. The group launched in the late 1990s. He has more recently been a Cincinnati political activist.

Con artist who helped Google probe to be sentenced

(AP) ? A massive federal investigation that resulted in Google Inc. forfeiting $500 million this year to settle criminal claims over its advertising began with the 2008 arrest of a jet-setting career con artist, who took federal agents in Rhode Island into the underground world of peddling pills online.

David Whitaker, 36, finalized the decision to help federal agents investigate Google within six weeks of being arrested in California after being expelled from Mexico, where he told authorities he spent his time selling drugs online, according to his plea agreement. He had already served three prison sentences and was staring down a maximum sentence of 65 years in Rhode Island for bilking $8.7 to $22.6 million from small businesses and a credit card company during the mid-2000s, court records show.

The plea deal he signed with federal prosecutors offered some salvation. If he agreed to help the government with an investigation, prosecutors would recommend a punishment "at the lowest point of sentences" when Whitaker learns his fate in the fraud case on Dec. 2 in U.S. District Court in Providence.

That was the start of his two-year stint using his experience to help federal agents expose how operators exploited Google's automated ad system known as AdWords to promote illegal Canadian pharmacies to American consumers.

But Whitaker's role in the Google case is cold comfort to those who say they were ripped off by his Rhode Island electronics equipment provider, Mixitforme Inc. He pleaded guilty in 2008 to wire fraud, conspiracy and other charges.

"It's wrong for the feds to use him," said Matthew Grosso, 47, who says he lost his Stony Brook, N.Y., business and $1.3 million after his dealings with Whitaker went sour in 2005.

"You're just perpetuating this guy's god mentality."

Whitaker's victims paint a picture of a high-flying executive who cheated them out of their small businesses.

Mixitforme began selling discount electronics in 2005 with Whitaker and a partner at the helm. The company claimed it had strong ties to overseas suppliers that made its prices about 30 percent lower than its competitors, officials said. The firm also claimed to be an authorized distributor for Apple and Motorola and said it had a special arrangement with Sony to sell its products. Federal prosecutors say those were all lies.

But Whitaker still found a way to lure clients. Grosso recalled visiting warehouses in New York and New England to look at Whitaker's stockpiles of consumer electronics, including iPods and gaming systems.

Trevor Sears, 36, of Salt Lake City, said he would only place orders with Whitaker after seeing photographs of the inventory he wanted to purchase.

Both Grosso and Sears said they placed small orders at first without problems.

But as customers poured more money into Mixitforme, Whitaker blew through Mixitforme's earnings by buying four luxury automobiles, renting a Miami mansion for $200,000 monthly, flying in a private airplane, staying in luxury hotels, renting a yacht and using a limousine driver and security team regularly, according to an affidavit signed by U.S. Secret Service Special Agent Craig Marech.

Grosso recalled Whitaker suggesting they meet at The Ritz-Carlton on Central Park in New York City, where Whitaker had a room. He said other people who did business with Whitaker described going to meet him on airport tarmacs where he'd fly in to on a private jet.

"He was living high on the hog," Grosso said.

At the same time, prosecutors say, deliveries slowed and excuses and cover-ups started piling up, such as faked tracking numbers for shipments or claims the goods were being held by customs agents. From July 2005 to March 2006, Mixitforme failed to deliver about $13 million worth of electronic equipment, Marech wrote.

Finally, Sears said, he flew to Rhode Island to confront Whitaker in his downtown Providence office about a $319,600 order that wasn't delivered.

"He wouldn't see me. He was locked in his office," said Sears, who is launching his first new business, 10bucksupplements.com, after spending years trying to get back on his feet.

"He literally ruined my life," said Sears. "For a few years, it was brutal."

Mixitforme was the latest scheme in a string of criminal accusations against Whitaker that date back more than a decade.

He was arrested in Hawaii in 1997 on charges of bank fraud and e-racketeering and he was sentenced to a year in prison, according to court papers. The next year, he was arrested in New Orleans on a bank fraud charge and sentenced to a year and a day in prison. U.S. marshals also picked him up in 2000 for making forged securities and he was sentenced to 10 months in prison, the affidavit said.

Finally, after federal agents executed a search warrant at the Providence headquarters of Mixitforme, Marech says Whitaker took off for Albuquerque, N.M., where he went by the name Slade Austin and set up a company called Coyotego.com that also sold consumer electronics at below-market prices. That business, too, was shut down after a search in July 2007, but by that time Whitaker had already fled to Mexico, Marech wrote.

But what may save him from a long sentence is one last strategy: his work for the government.

Whitaker helped investigators construct phony websites that purported to sell the drugs, officials said. Then, an undercover investigator would tell Google employees who were creating the advertising for the products that they were manufactured overseas and did not require customers to have a valid prescription, officials said.

Federal officials said Google knew as early as 2003 that its ad system was allowing Canadian pharmacies to make illegal sales. Shipping prescription drugs into the U.S. from abroad violates drug and other laws, investigators said. If the case had gone to trial, federal prosecutors would have to prove an Internet search engine helped pharmacies violate federal law.

Google is no longer letting Canadian online pharmacies advertise to U.S. consumers. It also agreed in August to forfeit $500 million to avoid criminal prosecution for accusations that it improperly profited from ads promoting Canadian pharmacies that illegally imported drugs into the United States.

A Google spokeswoman declined to comment, as did spokesmen for Rhode Island U.S. Attorney Peter F. Neronha and federal Food and Drug Administration investigators, who led the probe. Whitaker's attorney, George J. West, also declined to comment.

Grosso and Sears said they had no idea Whitaker helped federal investigators on the Google case. They say they hope his help doesn't overshadow their suffering.

"He sure lived off the money he stole from people while they went down in flames," Sears said. "I certainly hope he doesn't get leniency."

China considers new law better defining terrorism (AP)

BEIJING ? China said Tuesday that it is considering new legislation to better define terrorism and allow for the public listing of terrorist groups, in an effort to strengthen prosecution against domestic threats and bolster Beijing's role in international cooperation.

A proposal before the national legislature would provide more specific legal definitions for terrorists and terrorist acts based on Chinese and international precedents, making it easier to bring terrorism charges, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

The proposal targets those using violence, sabotage or threats in hopes of intimidating or coercing governments or international organizations. Incitement, funding or providing other support would also be considered terrorism.

Terrorist groups would be publicly named and the legislation would strengthen existing rules on seizing their domestic assets.

"Current legislation lacks specific regulations defining terrorism, terrorist organizations and individual terrorists, affecting the fight against terrorism, control over terrorist assets and international anti-terrorism cooperation," Xinhua said, quoting deputy Public Security Minister Yang Huanning.

China says it faces an organized terrorist threat from radical Muslim groups in the northwestern region of Xinjiang, although critics say Chinese economic policies and strict rules over cultural and religious expression are creating anger and resentment among the region's traditional Turkic Uighur (WEE'-gur) ethnic group.

China has been accused of exploiting terrorism fears to justify crackdowns on legitimate dissent, and the U.S. has refused demands to hand over Uighurs captured in Afghanistan and Pakistan and held at Guantanamo Bay. While Beijing has at times accused Tibetan activists of plotting terrorism, opposition to Chinese rule in the Himalayan region has been mainly peaceful.

The proposed legislation is on track to eventually become a new anti-terrorism law, said Li Wei, a counterterrorism expert at the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations, a think tank affiliated with the government's main intelligence agency, the Ministry of State Security.

That would for the first time provide a comprehensive mechanism for specifically prosecuting terrorism, including defining such crimes and clarifying the roles of anti-terrorism bodies, as well as laying out procedures for seizing terrorist funds, Li said.

"How often it is used depends on how often such acts occur, but China will now have a law which deals specifically with terrorist crimes," he said.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said that the ministry was following the drafting of the new law and that China was drawing from the experiences of other countries in dealing with terrorism.

"China will continue to deepen cooperation with regional countries and international organizations to step up contacts and coordination," Jiang said at a daily news briefing.

Most of the government's terrorist accusations focus on groups in Xinjiang, which has been on edge since nearly 200 people were killed in fighting between Uighurs and Han Chinese in 2009 in Urumqi, the regional capital. China accused overseas Uighur activists of orchestrating the violence, but provided no direct evidence.

Violence this year flared anew July 18, when a group of Uighurs stormed a police station in Hotan and took hostages, killing four. Then, on July 30 and 31, Uighurs in Kashgar hijacked a truck, set a restaurant on fire and stabbed people in the street.

Authorities said that 14 of the attackers were shot by police in Hotan, and that five assailants were killed in the violence in Kashgar.

China again blamed overseas activists for what it described as organized terrorist attacks, specifically Pakistan-based militants affiliated with al-Qaida. One group, the Turkistan Islamic Party, claimed one of the attackers in Hotan had previously visited one of its training camps.
