NVIDIA demoed the new goodness on a Honeycomb slate with 1280 x 800 resolution and the frame rates remained smooth throughout. In order to emphasize the generational leap that we can expect with Kal-El, the company switched off two of the four cores momentarily, which plunged performance down to less than 10fps. That means the simulations we're watching require a full quartet of processing cores on top of the 12-core GPU NVIDIA has in Kal-El. Mind-boggling stuff. Glow Ball will be available as a game on Android tablets once this crazy new chip makes its way into retail devices -- which are still expected in the latter half of this year, August if everything goes perfectly to plan. On a Saturday morning in Indianapolis, 100 high school students from around the country gather in an airplane hangar to enter their creations in an epic war.

"Three, two, one, let 'er rip!" says local business owner Steve Overton, who is serving as announcer.

On his cue, the machines fire up. They look more like toy cars than mechanical people. Except unlike most remote control cars, these have spinning metal blades and other weapons attached to them.

When I came into high school I had no idea what I wanted to do, but getting into [robot wars] definitely interested me in the engineering aspect of things.

This project has a greater goal than robot demolition. The organizers are trying to interest young people in high-tech manufacturing.

"Manufacturing's not a smokestack industry anymore," says National Tooling and Machining Association Chairman Grady Cope. "What we do is cool."

Cope's company sponsors this robot fight league. He owns his own manufacturing company outside Denver.

"We don't have any incoming young people, and our businesses are all ready to grow right now," he says. "One of the things we've really wanted to do is find a way to attract kids back to the engineering and manufacturing environments."

Learning Skills While Building Robots

Local manufacturers team up with high school and college students to help build the robot competitors. In the process, the students gain exposure to a modern manufacturing shop.

Many of these companies have big computer-controlled robotic machines that make parts for anything from jet engines to racing bicycles to surgical tools. These businesses need workers who are good with math to program and operate those machines.

Anna Zolnikov, 15, is the driver for one of her team's robots. In what may have been the most dramatic hit of the day, she knocked out an opponent in about 3 seconds. Now she's working on another robot in the pit-crew area.

"I'm fixing my robot," she says. "One of its teeth was knocked off in a fight, so I'm putting him all back together."

The effort seems to be working overall. At the table next to Zolnikov, high school senior Dakotah Cleaver of Bloomsburg, Pa., says when he goes to college next year he plans to study high tech engineering.

"When I came into high school I had no idea what I wanted to do, but getting into this definitely got me interested in the engineering aspect of things," he says.

But first he must prepare his robot, Excessive Force, for the next battle. It has a big steel and bronze lobster claw hanging off its side.

The Indianapolis 500, billed as the "greatest spectacle in racing," celebrates its 100th birthday on Sunday.

It's also a big day for Robert Joss. The 82-year-old has attended every Indy 500 since 1947.

Joss, who lives in Indianapolis, got his first ticket from his Uncle Floyd back when Harry Truman was president. Fresh out of Howe Military School, Joss says, he wasn't particularly fresh that first race day.

"In those days they used castor oil in the engines, and, boy, you could smell it," Joss tells NPR's Rachel Martin. He was only about 20 feet from the track during that race. "After about two laps, you were saturated."

Even with that oily beginning, Joss was hooked.

A Few Roadblocks

His consecutive-race streak was only threatened a few times.

One year, he forgot his ticket and Uncle Floyd pulled a few strings to get him in. A few years later, Joss had to arrange his furlough from the Army around the race.

And 1973 brought an epic rain delay. Joss, who was a schoolteacher at the time, had to take off in the middle of a school day to attend the 500, while two colleagues covered his classes.

Perhaps the closet call came in 1960. His wife, Margaret, was pregnant. Her due date? Race day.

She tried to draw a line in the sand: If she hadn't given birth before the Indy 500, she said, he couldn't attend.

Robert Joss was introduced to the Indy 500 by his Uncle Floyd back in 1947. Last year, his companion was his grandson, Max Lyski (above), accompanied by the traditional turkey leg.

"I casually said to her, 'Well, you can call me out at the track, I'll be out there,' " he remembers, chuckling. "Me and 250,000 other people."

Lucky for Joss (and Margaret), his daughter was born a week later.

"She could've hung it over my head for a long time," he says.

Bring On The Noise

After six-plus decades, you'd think the Indy 500 would start to become a blur. But Joss says he gets excited for it every year, especially in the first lap.

Before the start, he and his Uncle Floyd used to calm their nerves with "a good snort of whiskey before it started." Now, with his uncle long dead and his grandson as race-day companion, Joss has traded the bourbon for a few beers. He's a diabetic and has undergone open heart surgery.

"I have to kind of take care of myself," he says.

But his eardrums still get a workout. Joss has never worn earplugs to a race. After years of driving a semi-truck to supplement his teacher's income, he says, he's gotten used to noise.

Being the hard-core Indy fan he is, does he feel confident enough to bet on a winning driver?

"I'd rather bet on whether it'll rain in the next five minutes," he says with a laugh, "There's too many variables."

Even if he can't pick a winner, Joss seems content these days to eat turkey legs in the stands with his grandson. He hopes to get to few more races under his belt to make his record an even 70 years.

"If I can still crawl," he says, "I'll be going."

Two interns with an interest in elder law picked up some real life experience this past semester in our office.

Bailey Flask and Allison Reinersmann, then third-year law students at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, got the chance to put their newly minted legal skills to work at Sykes Elder Law two days a week for several months.

?I feel I?ve learned more here than in many of my substantive courses,? Ms. Reinersmann said. ?In the classroom you learn theory and here you learn how to practice. Having both is what makes a good lawyer.

Ms. Flask delved into veterans benefits for aid and attendance, working on applications and improving our checklists and processes. When she had completed her first application, she hand delivered it to the local Veterans Administration office in downtown Pittsburgh.

Working as an intern requires a student to give attention to some of the practical details of a law practice. For example, does the IRS require an employer identification number when a client establishes an irrevocable trust? Not always, Ms. Flask discovered, and backed up her research with excerpts from tax code regulations and excerpts from IRS instruction forms.

Ms. Reinersmann researched and wrote a detailed memorandum on the use of an irrevocable life insurance trust as a means to protect assets from Medicaid spend-down. She also drafted petitions to be filed in Orphans? Court, worked on an appellate brief in a Social Security disability case, and researched the standards for requesting Medicaid planning in a guardianship case.

Ms. Flask recently landed a job with the Veterans Administration. She credited her work at the firm with making her more conversant about veterans? legal issues during her interviews with the VA.

Ms. Reinersmann has returned to the firm this summer to help out part time while she studies for the bar exam.

Humanities, made obvious by the name, is the study of the humans. From how humans were formed from apes, to how humans organize themselves as a society. It is a curriculum formed with many subjects. Geography, economics, anthropology, archeology, politics, sociology, history and psychology are the fields studied in class. ?I?ve studied in depth about the rise and government of the ancient Egypt civilization. It is important to study this in humanities because, as my dad had explained to me in one proverb, history repeats itself. I chose to research about ancient Egypt because I have recently read a book based on ancient Egypt called ?The Red Pyramid? by Rick Riordan. While reading, I became very confused about this topic, but also very interested.

The civilization in ancient Egypt was possible because of the Nile river and the fertile land ?brought by it. The whole civilization, from 3000 BC to 30 BC, lived basing on agriculture in the middle of the Sahara desert. The Nile river flooded the earth, and after the water retreated, the soil left would be full of nutrients and suitable for agriculture. With great land for farming, people moved there, settled down and Ancient Egypt became one of the first civilizations to start farming. By 3000 BC, farmers were not only capable of planting seed, but were also able to use animals, technology and irrigation ditches to overcome agricultural problems. Likewise to many civilizations, ancient Egypt rose because of good geographic features.

The Egyptian government was one of the first monarchy. This is a type of government in which there is a supreme ruler that owns and rules everything. In ancient Egypt, that supreme ruler was called the Pharaoh, believed to be a living god whose job was to to bring peace to the society. Ancient Egypt was divided into states, and the Pharaoh assigned representatives (often rich citizens) to run the estates. Those representatives had control over their states, but they still had to do what the Pharaoh commanded and send to the Pharaoh crops grown in their states. Ancient Egypt also had a stable government because of their writing, hieroglyphs, so they were able to write laws.

Ancient Egypt was one of the first civilization and they still impact on our modern society in many ways. Many countries are still a monarchy and agricultural skills from ancient Egypt are still used or have been further improved. Had ancient Egypt not existed, humans would not have a base to evolute to our modern world. Many other civilizations were created in the same way as Egypt, so it is important to know how it all first began.

Worried that Panasonic would kill off Sanyo's signature pistol-grip camcorders after it bought its rival last year? Fear not -- Panny just went and resurrected Sanyo's ergonomic design with three new models - slapping its own brand on 'em, of course. And, in a move that would do Sanyo proud, Panasonic brought back the DMX-CA100 / VPC-CA100, a 1080p camcorder Sanyo released last year under the same name. It's gotten a spec boost, though, with the ability to snap 16 megapixel still photos, up from 14.4. The other two -- the HX-DC15 and the HX-DC1 -- both shoot 1080p video as well, with the DC15 offering 16GB internal memory and a 16 megapixel sensor, and the DC1 able to take 14.4 megapixel stills. No word on availability outside Japan, but we're sure those of you with a penchant for flip-out displays and candy-colored plastic will find a way to snag one.
