Boy Scouts get Game Design badge

The new Game Design badge isn't just for computer games but all forms of gaming.

The Boy Scouts of America have created a merit badge in Game Design.

Unveiled at the tech and culture festival, South by South West (SXSW), the badge is awarded for analysing the pros and cons of four existing games, talking about intellectual property then for creating a new game. Games can be of any form, including using playing cards, a board or a computer.

Talking of the launch, the Scouts said two years of work by ?volunteers from the game industry and game enthusiasts across the country? lead to the development of the list of requirements.

Further it said that "[playing games]... challenges us to overcome long odds, tell compelling stories, and work with or against one another.? and that games also ?motivate both young and old to find creative solutions, practice new skills, and keep their brains active.?

Although the Game Design badge isn't specifically a technology or computing based award, the Scouts acknowledged they were working on four other technology based merit badges. Programming, CAD, animation and 'advanced computing' are all to be introduced during 2014 and 2015.

It's all a far cry from basic life skills such as building camp fires but would you have taken on the Game Design challenge as a Scout?
