Wife's suspicions lead to false alarm (AP)

LONDON ? Scotland Yard says a suspicious device placed in a man's car that caused them to summon the bomb squad and close a number of streets was put there by his wife in an apparent effort to track his whereabouts.

The man found the flashing device in his vehicle in Surrey, south of London, and feared it was an explosive.

Police said Friday he drove to the nearest station and reported it, spurring them into action. An ambulance and the fire department were also summoned.

A spokeswoman who asked not to be identified because of police policy said the man's wife called police 30 minutes later to report that a security company had put the tracking device in the car at her request.

Police say the device was not dangerous and was removed without incident.
