Flathead gun barrel company president describes scene at Vegas gun show

KALISPELL, Mont. -

NBC Montana has been trying to get ahold of staff at the gun companies that make up the Flathead?s gun industry, to get their reactions to President Obama?s gun control proposals, but many folks have been out of town at the SHOT Show in Las Vegas. The gun trade show is one of the largest in the country.

On Thursday, NBC Montana connected with the president of a barrel company that operates in the Flathead. Ron Duplessis owns McGowen Precision Barrels, which employs more than 20 people in the Flathead. He tells NBC Montana that industry insiders have been keeping updated through family members, mobile devices and TVs around the convention area.

He also says that for now, the gun regulations that have passed in New York State appear to have made the biggest waves at the show.

?First, it was disbelief and they didn?t know what to think. The assumption was the President was going to issue some executive orders that were going to be pretty much catastrophic to the industry,? said Duplessis. ?Once we kind of digested his speech and saw him sign a couple orders on TV?then we actually looked at the executive orders and they?re really a bunch of fluff.?

Duplessis also told NBC Montana that it?s too early to tell, but if Obama?s proposals become law, there may be some layoffs at his Flathead operation.?
