UPDATE: Rain, snow, wind and cold temperatures forecast for Southern California; I-5 closed at Grapevine

UPDATE 9:44 a.m.: The CHP has reopened?the Grapevine section of Interstate 5 in the mountains north of?Los Angeles. The section was closed because of snow and several accidents.

UPDATE 8:19 a.m.:?Snow and icy road conditions have closed the Grapevine section of Interstate 5 in the mountains north of?Los Angeles Thursday morning as winter weather bears down on Southern California.

The California Highway Patrol has shut down the major north-south route at Fort Tejon. Several accidents have been reported.

?It?s really cold and it?s dropping snow that?s sticking to the roadway which creates a hazardous environment for our motoring public," said CHP Officer?John Lutz.?"So because there (are) no services for the 40-mile stretch between Parker and the other side of the hill, we closed the roadway for the motoring public?s safety.?

The National Weather Service says the mountains could see snow levels down to 2,000 feet Thursday, while winds may gust to 60 mph there and up to 45 mph in valleys and coastal areas.

Highs will only hit the 50s and 60s and rain showers are expected throughout the region. It's expected to be even colder on Friday and the cold will linger through the weekend.

There also will be overnight frosts and freezes in colder valleys.

PREVIOUSLY: Southern California's in for cold, wind and snow as a winter weather front bears down through the weekend.

The National Weather Service says highs will only hit the 50s and low 60s Thursday, with a chance of light rain.

Winds could gust to 45 mph in valleys and coastal areas, with 60 mph gusts in the mountains and Antelope Valley.

North of?Los Angeles, the California Highway Patrol is escorting traffic through the Grapevine area of Interstate 5 because of snow.

Forecasters say an inch or two of snow is possible in the mountains, with the level dropping to 2,000 feet.

There will be overnight frosts and freezes in colder valleys through the weekend.

Meanwhile, winds and high tides of nearly 7 feet Thursday morning may cause minor coastal flooding.
