HARRISONBURG -- Shenandoah Valley Electric Cooperative (SVEC) is calling for its customers to conserve energy in times like this when a lot of people are running their air conditioners.

"Water and a hat," said Steve Riddlebarger, a SVEC customer, describing the items he uses to beat the heat.

That's not all he is doing to stay cool.

"We run the air conditioner, but we have the air conditioner setup a little bit higher," said Riddlebarger.

He may not know it, but by doing so the Shenandoah Valley Electric Cooperative (SVEC) customer is saving on energy. Something SVEC urges people to do this summer.

"Refrigerators etc. have to work harder when temperatures are 90..95 degrees," said Aulgur.

Harder work means more money out of your pocket.

"I think I'm more concerned with staying cool than how much it costs me," said Riddlebarger.

With this week's heat wave, SVEC isn't calling for customers to turn off those air conditioners, instead what they are calling for is for them to simply think about how they use them.

SVEC doesn't want the energy used by its customers to eventually lead to brown outs.

"So a brown out isn't necessarily a total blackout, what you have is waves of electricity going on and off," said Aulgur.

Need to cut down on your energy use this summer try closing your curtains and blinds to keep out the sun, turning off your appliances when they are not in use, and avoiding washing dishes and clothes between 3:00 PM and 8:00 PM.

"We all need to watch what we're doing and make sure we're not overloading any of the systems," said Riddlebarger.

Aulgur says that the recent outages in Page County are not related to over use of energy by customers.

He says that those incidents are still under investigation and that they were due to equipment failures.
