Winfried Schafer Appointed New Jamaica Coach

The Cameroon coach who lastly won the African Nations Cup in 2002 with the lions, Winfried Schafer has been named as the new coach of Jamaica. The 63-year-old German has previously managed Thailand, as well as a host of club sides in his 31-year managerial career.

German football manager Winfried Schafer shocked Thai fans early Thursday morning as he announced his sudden departure from Muangthong United to take charge of World Cup 2014 hopefuls Jamaica. Schafer had only been at the Thai club for a few weeks after his acrimonious split with the Thai FA in June following a lengthy public exchange of words.

Schafer takes over from Theodore Whitmore who was asked to step down following a disappointing World Cup qualifying campaign that culminated with a recent defeat to Honduras. He has signed a 4-month contract expiring in November to oversee the Reggae Boyz remaining four Concacaf qualifying matches.

Schafer, who had a successful playing career in his native Germany, faces a tough task to guide his side to the 2014 finals in Brazil, with the country currently bottom of their qualifying group with two points.

A statement on the Jamaican Football Federation official website welcomed Schafer to the job, adding: ?This is certainly another chapter in Jamaican football, a chapter which could bring bountiful rewards.
